Short Story: Casey Strails: The First Day Of School?
Casey Strails, the smallest kid in the class since school started. His name might as well be Midget Strails, because only teachers called him Casey. There was nothing wrong with him, just that he was short and thin. It was getting more embarrassing year by year that he would not grow. By year six, it was the most embarrassing as it had ever been. A knock on the door. “Time to get up Case! First day of year seven! What an excitement!” his dad chanted through his bedroom door. Yeah, what an excitement to get picked on, Casey thought, hobbling out of bed. He looked in his mirror. Yep, still a midget. Still Midget. He put on some school clothes and head down for breakfast. “Ready for the first day of school?” “What do you think Livi?” “I know champ, it will be hard. I would still be there if I had my way.” “I would to Livi.” “Casey and Olivia, eat your breakfasts! The bus is here in five minutes!” their mother announced. They ate so fast they nearly choked, rushing out the door with their backpacks. The bus came right as their feet stepped foot on the bus stop. They hurried on and took seats in the very back. “Hey look! It’s Midget Strails! He’s gotten glasses, too! Four Eyed Midget Strails! Four Eyed Midget Strails!” one kid yelled. Casey buried his head in shame. He had nothing to be ashamed about, but he felt guilt go over him, like a wave in the ocean. Livi was now talking to one of her friends, Ashley. She was talking about her little sister being adopted and coming here. “Hey champ, there’s somebody I want you to meet,” Olivia said. “Livi, you introduced me to Ashley twenty times,” Casey said back. “Champ, I mean her little sister Charity.” A little tiny girl poked her head out behind Ashley, followed by her long chocolate hair and her red nose.
