Personal Narrative: Dark Gray Shelters
One day I was just sitting in a dark gray shelter crowded with over a million different cats and dogs. Then I saw this little girl with brown hair and brown eyes and she looked like she was four or five years old. The little girl was just walking around the animal shelter then she stopped at me and said, “Mommy mommy , can I please have this kitty he is so cute?”
Then her mom looked at me and said, “No Tina that cat has no tail and I don’t want to have a cat in my house that doesn’t have a tail it doesn’t look normal.”
So after I saw that girl and heard what her mother said about me and told her daughter that I wasn’t normal I felt depressed that I wasn’t like everyone else in this shelter.I never knew that I was different than the other animals.I thought i was pretty similar to

When I rubbed against the cage there were more than one hundred different families swarming around me like bees trying to protect their queen bee. These families were all around me just so they could play with me.

Then a couple of days later which felt like a million years I saw a little girl and her family come into the animal shelter. The little girl and her family were just walking around then the little girl said in an excited tone, “Mommy, daddy look it’s a cute little kitty and he is different.”
So the little girl’s mom and dad started talking and it all just sounded like “Wah wah wah wah.” Then I finally understood what they were saying in their long conversation. They were deciding if they wanted me or not. I heard one thing that they were saying and it was, “Ashley we are going to get you this cat because it deserves a loving home and he is way different than the other cats we have seen.”
So a couple hours later after this family filled out all the paperwork I got to go home with a family that loves me even though I look

When I was around four years old, we got our very first dog. I can remember driving to the breeders house. I was very excited to be getting a dog. When we got to their house, it was very small. My parents talked to the breeder for what felt like ages. We finally got to see all of the dogs that they had. The room that the puppies were in had a crib, and dog beds. I saw some very, very little puppys, I really wanted them all. The one that we chose, was hiding under the crib. We named him Poncho after the parent's name.…

Having the luxury of great health and family, it can be difficult for me to see outside the realm of comfortability and see the daily hardships people experience. There are so many people without housing, stability, and monetary resources, and these people often find themselves wondering where they can find help and figure out what to do next during trying times. One place people can reach out for assistance is Ronald McDonald House Charities. The nonprofit provides housing and food for families with a critically ill child in the hospital. The forty-two room house aims to provide comfort and support for families living through their worst nightmare. The charity provides this support by its network of staff and volunteers who prepare food for…

My foster family was very happy for me, though. They were beyond excited to know that I was going to a new and loving family. Once I was happily settled in the world, the adoption agency started filing for my visa, passport, and worked on many other important documents to get me home to the Unites States. The paperwork was finally done around the beginning of September. The paperwork then sat on a government official's desk for about a month because he was on vacation. When he returned, he eventually approved our paperwork. After he approved the paperwork, a flight was scheduled to arrive at the Detroit International Airport, and a person to fly home with me, Bonnie. The day had finally come, November 18th, 2003. I was ready to go home to see my new family. On the airplane, I got 2 pink eyes and an ear infection, which was definitely not fun for me. At the airport, many people were there to greet…

After introducing myself to all the girls, the 12 girls dragged me to their room with so much excitement. Walking into their room, I had to stop and take a deep breath. I knew the orphanage wouldn't have much, but I never imagined how little they really had. Their room looked like it belonged to an old abandoned house. The ceiling caved in; it smelled of an old dusty attic and had nothing in it but 12 beds, 3 dressers and a couple dirty stuffed animals just lying around. Some girls had pictures of when they were babies, some didn't have anything. I stood there silent. Tears balanced on my eyelids because at that moment, I realized that I have been so ungrateful for what I have, while other young, beautiful girls around the world have nothing but a bed and a stuffed animal. I think about all my clothes, shoes, friends and family that…

Did you know that there are over 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats in shelters? Did you also know that one every thirteen seconds are euthanized ("Pet Overpopulation: The Humane Society of the United States")? These animals don’t ask to be brought into this world to be put in a small, cold enclosed cage. I personally wouldn’t want to be born into the world to be given up on, would you? Too many people don’t understand or even care to understand this sad statistic. In fact, humanity is so selfish in that aspect it makes me truly sick. Why do we have to have the cutest puppies or kittens? What’s wrong with an older dog, you don’t have to train them half the time. They need love too. My goal gave me the motivation to reach out to my local shelter that influenced me to explore programs in the future to help all dogs and cats.…

At that time the only thing that would keep me going is music. It wasn’t my family, nor my friends, teachers or even sports. I would get lost in the lyrics, and it put all of my troubles away for a while. One day I came across Miranda Lambert’s “House that Built Me.” The song really hit me hard when she sang “I thought if I could touch this place or feel it, this brokenness inside me might start healing, out here it's like I'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself.”…

It was a Super Bowl game night. The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens were playing as me and my family watched. The sound of popcorn popping in the kitchen and the smell of biscuits in the oven was all around the house. Later on that evening, I felt that there was something wrong, so I tiptoed away from the living room to go look for my dog, and when I found her, she was breathing really hard as if she had ran a marathon. A few seconds later, I came to my senses and realized that she was giving birth, Lexie had six puppies. The runt of the litter was my favorite, she was completely white with little brown spots on her tail. Seeing that she was white and delicate, Tiffany and I decided to name her Snowflake.…

I remember when they kicked us out. It was only a couple of weeks ago. We Indians were minding our own business when the troops first came. They dragged us out of our tents and sent us walking with only the clothes on our back. My family decided to go to the Oklahoma region along with our tribe. And so here we are, walking through forests, woods, and plains on The Trail of Tears, looking for our destination. We have been walking since, and our clothing can do nothing against the harsh rain, snow, and coldness.…

With a family full of dogs, that would never happen. To pursue my admiration for these furry creatures, I started volunteering at a cat rescue, and what did I find out? I’m allergic to cats! Anytime I got near one my eyes get watery and I want to scratch my skin off. Not only did I not receive a cat when I was little, instead I gratefully received a dog, but also I can’t be near them. These changes of events have converted me to being a dog person and to appreciate felines from afar.…
