Personal Narrative: Josh Should Never Get Up
Josh should never have gotten up yesterday. He knew it was going to be a bad day when he knocked over a glass of water on his nightstand while turning off the alarm. As he stumbled from bed to get a mop he knocked over the trash can in his bedroom. Once the mess was cleaned up, he was thoroughly awake. He went to the kitchen to brew himself a cup of Maxwell house coffee only to discover that the can was empty. Grumbling he went to the front door to retrieve his favorite newspaper, New York Times he was not surprised to find that it was not there. Thanks a lot, paperboy, Josh said to himself. He returned to the kitchen drank a glass of juice, grabbed his books, and hurried down to the bus stop. Since no one was there, he realized

Next, this unit taught me that there’s something to be learned from every experience. The story “Star Food” is about a young boy, named Dade, who works at his parent’s grocery store. He spends most of his time daydreaming on the rooftop, avoiding work. His father does not encourage him to miss work, while his mother supports him. In the story we are introduced to a character, a woman, who steals something some bread from the store. Dade watched it all happen but, he didn’t try to stop her. He had stopped people for stealing and confronted, but not this time. Then, it happened again. The same woman came in and she stole some pineapple juice. After she had stolen again Dade began to really think about what he wanted. He said “I tried to discover…

The headline from last week's newspaper flashed through my mind. How could I have been so stupid. I chucked a quick glance over my shoulder and saw his face hanging low. It looked like he'd gotten closer and I tried to think of what I could do to make sure I wouldn't become another…

Jim just won the big fight that Joe had got him. He won $250! I was sure that something would go wrong, and Jimmy wouldn’t have come home to us safely. His hand had just healed and Joe came marching in getting him a new fight! Although they promised it was just a one-time thing, I have my doubts. I just don’t want Jimmy fighting anymore. We can’t afford it! Everything is bad enough without having to worry about Jim’s health or – god forbid – losing him! Jimmy really believes in President Roosevelt fixing things, but we all have our doubts that he is any different than Hoover. When we lost all of our money with what Jim had invested from his boxing earnings into what we thought was safe in the stock market, we lost everything. We had to move to a poor neighborhood, crammed in with everyone else from the community. I should be thankful though; at least we haven’t been forced to move into a Hooverville! I don’t think I could survive there, let alone bring Jay, Howard, and Rosemarie into that kind of danger! I hear all the time about riots and fires that burst out there. That kind of danger is scary just to imagine. I feel like once you move into one of those shanties, there is no hope of ever coming out of this mess.…

Many people see or hear about tragedies around the world; however, few actually do something about it. People seem to think that the news, itself, will fix the problem. This idea is incorrect according to John Swift and T. Coraghessan Boyle. Both authors propose solutions that are ironic and abstractly forward and blunt for a problem in their lives.…

But on this particular night, a humid night at that, there was absolutely no sound to be heard. Not even the squeal of a tyre edging around the street corner, or the cackle of an old man passing by. Feeling the aching in my wrists turn to a sharp pain, I peered down at the several plastic bags that I was holding; full of the essential shopping that I had gone out to get last minute for dinner. One of the bags (the one that was hurting my wrists) was clearly overfilled, but I couldn’t do anything about that, not now, in the middle of the street. Letting out a heavy sigh, I carried on walking, reaching carelessly into my pocket to clasp my phone. In the humidity, it felt lovely to have the cold, metal block against my hands. I pulled it out, feeling around in the darkness around me for the switch to turn it on with. I paused, under a spot in which the moonlight was beaming down upon on the road. Underneath the only source of light in the pitch black city, I checked my phone for any messages or calls that we important. There was nothing, apart from one message from my sister telling me to buy her some magazines. I hadn’t and since I had already come out of the shop and had begun my walk home, I wasn’t going to go back just for her sake. Feeling even hungrier as the time sped past, I decided that it would probably just be better to go home so that I could eat as quickly as possible. My stomach however, had other ideas. The loud rumble that came from deep inside it, suggested that I should eat preferably sooner rather than later. Ignoring it, I crouched down and scooped up my plastic shopping…
