Friendship and Varsity Lacrosse Team

English 10
9 October 2011
Making The Varsity Lacrosse Team Since sixth grade I have been working hard, putting forth the extra effort, staying as healthy as I can, and practicing as much as I can, just to make the varsity lacrosse team. To my surprise, just two days after try-outs, I had made it. Making that varisty lacrosse team is one of the greatest accomplishments of my life so far. About a month before try-outs I had to get my act together and start working out. So everyday after school I would go with my friend Trevor to the gym so I could run and get in shape. This was crucial because I hadn’t run much since last summer. After working hard at the gym, another aspect of my game had to be brought up to the next level, shooting. So instead of my daily routine of going to the gym after school, I would go home and shoot on my lacrosse goal. Everyday after school I would at least shoot a little bit in hopes of making varsity in March. After two hard days of mostly running at try-outs, I received a phone call from our new varsity lacrosse coach, Coach Simms. He called to congratulate me on making the varsity lacrosse team. This was truly one of the most memorable moments of my life. He told me that I was going to be the only freshman on varsity but that all that players were going to be just fine with that. Turns out a few of my good friends came from the team, which was nice. Making the varsity lacrosse team was a great experience that I will never forget. Try-outs this spring should be fun because we are going to be a great team this year. Putting in a lot of hard work and getting rewarded for that work is one of the most humbling feelings a person can have. Making the team taught me that with enough perseverance and hard work I can reach ant goal I set for myself.

A long term goal of mine was to be an Ohio High School Boys Volleyball Association State Champion. This goal came from my dad and cousins because they were all volleyball players. I wanted to follow in their footsteps of success. To achieve this goal I knew that I needed to participate in a select volleyball team. I knew this would increase my overall skill level and it would prepare me for the more intense high school volleyball I would face later on. Select volleyball wasn't easy. Different obstacles always seemed to come up. It would range from being placed on a lower quality team or having coaches that didn't have my best interest in mind. The most difficult thing for me to face was always injuries. During my sophomore year I suffered an…

The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I first discovered what I’m really good at. I came across inspiring Youtube videos of old classic Roller Derby and recent ones that were published only a year ago, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on those quads that I had to try it. In less than two weeks I was a complete natural at skating, I was all about skates. I practiced all the derby stances, exercises, techniques you name it I am absolutely in love with this sport. but as much as I fantasized about doing it I never thought that I’d actually get the chance to be part of their world and have training by the Derby Dames Juniors Freshmeat Association crew, which are ranked the top thirty-one in the united states!…

Since my roommate is also on my team it was a huge relief to meet someone before our parents even left. Since then it's been smooth sailing and have made number of friends on the team, many which I already know ill be very good friends with in the future. This was probably the biggest relief for me so far because I had no idea what to expect. I kept worrying about how the kids, especially the new recruits, would be and literally every one is an awesome person. I didn't realize how much being on a sports team would help me make friends this fast, which I am extremely grateful for. We've all had so much fun already and we are just one week into school. On top of all of that, we are all at least 20 years old and up as freshman. I think this gives us a big advantage of transition for things like college because we are all at least two years more mature then we would have if we had gone right from high school. Now that is not to toot my or any of my friends horns, but I do feel as if the maturity level is definitely higher then it would have been by the overall way we carry and present ourselves as opposed to being 17 or 18. If the year is going to continue on like this, I can only imagine how much fun it's going to be. This is also all going without mentioning the hockey part. Hockey hasn't even started yet which excites me that much more.…

I'll never forget hitting the game winning shot for the high school state championship. Never have I felt so important in my life. The experience of having hundreds probably even thousands of people coming on the court to celebrate the hard work me and my teammates have put in to make it that far. Nothing else can compare to it. I believe hitting the game winning shot for the state championship is a one of a kind accomplishment.…

The first day of tryouts at my new high school was going extremely well. Socializing on the sideline, I thought, “Maybe high school isn’t going to be that bad after all.” However, The last drill of the day destroyed my hopes for making the lacrosse team. Running toward the goal, I felt a massive pop in my hip. A ligament had torn, and I could hardly walk. For weeks as I hobbled along on my cane, I would catch people staring at me in the hallways. Whether the cane or just low self-confidence, I never found that group of friends that I hoped for, mostly because I could rarely leave my house.…

As the first day of school came around my nerves were heightened, I was worried about the challenges I would encounter but I was determined to reach my goal. Soon after the first day of school, I realize that seventh grade was not going to be a breeze ,but it was manageable. My teachers were bombarding me with tests and quizzes, and I was not used to working at that speed. The first marking period came to an end and I earned distinguished honors for that marking period. That winter I tried out for school and travel basketball ,and I made both teams. My indoor lacrosse practice started for my summer travel league on Tuesdays at seven. During the week I would go to…

One of my proudest accomplishments I have achieved in my life was receiving my first superior rating in the Solo and Ensemble competition in 9th grade. The Solo and Ensemble competition is where students are able to form small groups or remain solo and perform a piece of music for an adjudicator. In my group with a cello, viola, and violins I was performing as one of the two violins. I remember my group would rehearse everyday at school for a couple months and would work hard each time to sound better. I also put in lots of practice outside of school to achieve an exceptional sound in order for our group to sound best as possible. When it came time to perform at the Solo and Ensemble competition our group had sounded even better than when…

When I started playing lacrosse, I wasn’t exactly an athlete, I was a regular on the bench, and I did not really care about what was happening on the field, I was just their because that’s what my friends were doing. As time went by and I started playing more, I realized that I was not half bad at the sport and my love for it blossomed. Lacrosse was all I spoke about, thought of, and did. It would be a surprise to see me around my house without a stick and I even wrote my first research paper on the origins of lacrosse. At…

A personal accomplishment that I am proud of is becoming the captain of my school’s volleyball team. I began playing volleyball my sophomore year. At first, I joined just because my friends were on the team, but soon volleyball became my passion. I worked hard to learn how to play by practicing every day at school, attending summer camps, and playing in summer leagues. While most of my friends were on vacation, I was at our high school gym playing volleyball and working on my technique. My coach noticed my athletic ability and allowed me to play on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams my first year.…

The day I walked into my first gymnastics class ever was at North Crest in 1st grade. I was so excited to finally be able to do gymnastics. All I did was sat tentively listening to my coach and trying everything I was asked to do. Being able to do all the jumps, leaps, and flips my coach asked me to do, showed me that I have the potential to be good at this sport. So after being in gymnastics for 6 years, I decided to try out for the High School team at school. After being evaluated on all my skill levels for 3 days on all events, it was time to figure out who made the Team. Amber, my coach called up name after name to come get there acceptance. Once she got to the last paper I figured I didn’t make the team, but she called my name and I flew right up there. There was no words to describe how happy I was to have made the team my 7th grade year. Usually people do not make the team until they reach their high school years. In every practice we stretch and do lines, then we work on our routines for every event, then at the end of practice we do super intense workouts to get us in shape to be able to compete our routines and to get us in shape to do harder skills. This now brings us to the practices I had the week before my big meet.…
