Personal Narrative: Roller Derby
The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I first discovered what I’m really good at. I came across inspiring Youtube videos of old classic Roller Derby and recent ones that were published only a year ago, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on those quads that I had to try it. In less than two weeks I was a complete natural at skating, I was all about skates. I practiced all the derby stances, exercises, techniques you name it I am absolutely in love with this sport. but as much as I fantasized about doing it I never thought that I’d actually get the chance to be part of their world and have training by the Derby Dames Juniors Freshmeat Association crew, which are ranked the top thirty-one in the united states!

There are some spots that are hard to skate and I couldn't really skate well and no matter how hard I try I can't land it. There's some stuff I can do and I practice all the time to make sure I can get better I may not be the best, but I try my hardest on skating.Occasionally it's difficult to ride or it's not working out on what you want, but friends help me to do new tricks and that's why on hard spots I try my hardest even if I get a scrape or even a bruise may even have a broken bone but there's always going to be something hard to do but doesn't mean it's impossible the day could be hot or cold making it difficult to skate in but there's always a different spot.…

The Fury, the fastest, longest, and tallest rollercoaster on the East Coast. With a top speed of 95 mph and a height of 325 feet makes it the biggest rollercoaster I had ever gotten on, beating the Intimidator 305 by 25 feet. I remember seeing on television and wanting to ride it really badly. It just looked so amazing and since I love rollercoasters and love riding rollercoasters, I knew it was something I had to do. I had ridden lots of rollercoasters before this one such as the Intimidator 305 and the Top Thrill Dragster, which I had enjoyed riding very much, and I figured that the Fury would be just as good. So I asked my parents of we could go to the Carrowinds to ride the Fury. They said yes and we went with my aunt to the Carrowinds.…

Trepidation filled my head. Despite the negative 10 degree weather, sweat pooled in my gloves and rolled down my face. Thoughts raced through my mind; a wrong execution could mean death. 11 years of ski lessons had cultivated to this one moment. My life was on the line, yet a wave of excitement shook me. I took a look down at the jump that had come to dominate Joe’s backyard, replacing his childhood swing set. The jump was sizable, but not gargantuan. From previous hits I noticed its “poppy” lip - skier talk for a jump that sends you up rather than out - which is ideal for the trick I was about to attempt: a backflip.…

About 2,500 miles east lies the cold and rainy city of Canton, Ohio. The majority of my childhood was spent inside the house as Ohio was not ideal for outdoor adventure. Although, after turning 6, I was introduced to snow skiing . It became an enjoyable hobby of mine for years. Skiing opened my eyes to the beauty of nature and the serenity it provided. I loved the smell of fresh air and the exhilarating feeling of gliding down the mountain. It is a very peaceful sport and provides a silence away from everyday life. Coincidentally, I learned of ski club in middle school where I could ski with several other students that enjoyed this exercise as well. I joined the club and looked forward to the weekly Sunday trips. It showed the importance…

When I was in second grade I learned that I loved competing with people and being good at things. I joined a gymnastics gym near my house in second grade when i was 9, and started competing when i was 10. My mom told me that I have to do well in school if I was going to be focused on a sport along with school, or she would take me out of gymnastics. Soon enough, I wasn’t doing so well in social studies and comm skills. I was scared my mom would make me quit, But I worked as hard as I could so get back up there. Focusing more on school than outside activities, I got that grade back up and I continued with my favorite sport. I love gymnastics, but I don’t let it get in the way of school because school always comes first.…

I’ve been a competitive cheerleader for the last seven years, and I can’t imagine doing any other sport. I’ve been a part of the Maryland Twisters cheerleading organization for three years, and as soon as I sat in on one of Eye of the Storms, the special needs team, practice I wanted to be a part of the team. After watching Eye of the Storm practice, I was amazed at the hard work and determination the athletes. I wanted to experience the love of cheerleading with these inspiring athletes. As soon as the new cheerleading year started, I spoke with the owner of Maryland Twisters about helping out with their special needs teams, Eye of the Storm and Storm Chasers. I was thrilled when she said the other coaches would love the extra help with the teams.…

Sunday, March 19, 2017 is a day I will never forget. A friend and I were at Rhino Coffee Downtown having some girl time and playing catch up. As I was sipping on my glass of prosecco, owner Andrew Crawford walked in and we spoke. After our initial greeting, he uttered five words that shattered my world, "They aren't any oysters this year". I IMMEDIATELY knew what he was talking about. There was no question about it. Andrew had just burst my Shreveport Derby Day bubble by letting me know that I wouldn't be feasting upon chargrilled oysters this year.…
