Write a 100- to 200-word response to each of the following questions. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

* What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination comes in different forms. It can be direct when someone’s gender, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, age, disability or being transgender is used as an explicit reason for treating them differently. This is the kind of discrimination that people often recognize easily. An example would be if a person is fired at work because of their sexual orientation.
It can be indirect when there are rules, services or ways of doing things that have the effect of discriminating against certain groups. For example, the local gym does not have handicapped accessible workstations. Discrimination is actual positive or negative actions towards a person or group based solely on their differences. An example would be an employer not hiring African Americans because he does not like them. Prejudice is an attitude towards a person or group based on their differences. An example would be someone who was robbed by a Mexican now thinking all Mexicans are thieves. A stereotype is a generalization of characteristics of people or a group based off their differences. An example would be all Asian people are poor drivers.
Schaefer, R. T. (2011). Racial and Ethnic Groups (13th ed.). : Pearson. * What are the causes of discrimination?
Discrimination is often based on ignorance, fear and stereotypical viewpoints. For example, religious and/or sectarian discrimination is often fuelled by people living and working in separate communities and therefore not having ample opportunity to interact with people from the other group. Discrimination is the denial of opportunites and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Prejudice is a negative attitude towards an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Stereotypes are unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. I believe that discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because, when we discriminate against someone we deny them opportunities or equal rights and when we prejudice or stereotype we just hold negative attitudes and make up or believe unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about members of a group or ethnic minorities.…

Racial and Ethics Group 13th Edition by Richard T. Schafer defines discrimination as the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because discrimination is the act of excluding a group from some right, privilege, or service which is based upon some form of prejudice or stereotyping. Stereotyping is a generalization of a group of people from a certain race which is usually negative and a prejudice is a first impression of a person which is usually based off a stereotype. Discrimination is actual positive or negative actions towards a person or group based solely on their differences. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Discrimination differs from prejudice and stereotyping, because discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights of individuals and groups due to prejudice. Prejudice is the unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand without the prior knowledge, thought or reason, while stereotyping is unreliable generalizations about certain groups. Discrimination can hinder a person from advancing in their life, holding them back from job opportunities as well as opportunities to buy their dream home and other opportunities. Stereotyping is something that many of us do without even realizing it, something as simple as seeing a man act effeminate and we assume he is gay, or a woman who is not effeminate we assume she is gay. Too many times in society we have certain prejudices and even though we may try to think that we are above certain prejudice as white Euro Americans we have a tendency to believe that once minorities start moving into our neighborhoods that our property values will drop.…
