Unit 4222-203
Unit 4222-203 Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young person’s settings
Outcome 1 Understand the importance of equality and inclusion
Diversity
Diversity in the modern world is an understanding that each individual is unique and that each individual will have his or her own needs. Encompassed under the heading diversity come the categories in which we all have to learn acceptance and respect. The categories are as follows. * Race * Ethnicity * Gender * Sexual Orientation * Age * Physical abilities / Disabilities * Religious beliefs * Other ideologies
Equality
Where as diversity is the acceptance of each individuals needs. Equality is there to ensure that people from all walks of life get treated fairly. In my understanding equality is there to ensure people who could experience discrimination are treated fairly in any given situation
Inclusion
Inclusion is a human right for every individual. Inclusion would mean that any person who experiences discrimination would have a fair chance at being able to do the things they really wanted to do. In my understanding many things have been done to help with inclusion i.e. * Wheel chair access for the disabled * Flexible working patterns for families with children
Discrimination
In my understanding discrimination would be to treat someone unfairly based on their race, colour, ethnicity or national origin. Also I feel that I should mention that along with the above, people could be discriminated against in the categories I listed for diversity.
Outcome 1.2
The examples I can think of some of which have been in the news are as follows
Deliberate
* Pregnancy / Children. Employers may not hire staff that are pregnant / have children or may try to sack them. * Race. Certain people may not get hired because of the colour of their race or ethnic background. * Gender. Certain jobs are thought of by some to be mans work or

Inclusion at its simplest is ‘the state of being included’ but it is a bit more complicated than that… It is used by disability rights activists to promote the idea that all people should be freely and openly accommodated without restrictions or limitations of any kind. It is described by some as the practice of ensuring that people feel they belong, are engaged, and connected. It is a universal human right whose aim is to embrace all people, irrespective of race, gender, disability or other attribute which can be perceived as different.…

It is important to support participation and equality of access so that every pupil has the same opportunities offered to them regardless of personal background. In order for us to achieve this we must involve the children in finding out what works well in school and what doesn’t.
