What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is the denial of opportunites and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Prejudice is a negative attitude towards an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Stereotypes are unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. I believe that discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because, when we discriminate against someone we deny them opportunities or equal rights and when we prejudice or stereotype we just hold negative attitudes and make up or believe unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about members of a group or ethnic minorities.

What are the causes of discrimination?

The causes of discriminaiton can sometimes result from prejudices held by individuals, or from the stereotypes we hold and believe about individuals and groups. However, I truly believe that discrimination really comes from our parents, families, providers, or the people who we look up to. Growing up I witnessed my father discriminated against African Americans, on many different occasions, this lead me to believe that my father was acting certains ways against this ethnic group people that’s the way we were suppose to. I am thankful for my mother who truly taught me that what my father was doing is discrimination and we should not discriminate against anyone, because everyone is human and deserves to be treated equal and fairly.

How is discrimination faced by one identity group (race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability) the same as discrimination faced by another? How are they

    * Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping by that of discrimination actually takes action. Whereas prejudice and stereotyping are more of making assumption of a person or a race, assuming that they are one way due to their ethnicity or what they heard about them before getting to know them. Discrimination as I stated actually takes action there are so many different types of discrimination that actually take place today. Example: Hate crimes- people do these acts based on a person’s race, religion, or sexual preference. With this form familie’s. Another type of discrimination is institutional discrimination this can hinder someone from being hired because of their past or even color. An institution can hire just one race that controls all the laws over a town, and then make it hard for the minority to live since they may not know what it is like to struggle with everyday life.…

Prejudice is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of the prejudice or for others arbitrary. The biggest difference between the two is that prejudice involves attitudes, thoughts and beliefs with no action. Whereas, discrimination involve behavior that exclude members of a group from certain rights, opportunities or privileges. Back when segregation was permitted whites were prejudice against black therefore, did not allow blacks to attend the same school as they attended. Discrimination can come in all shapes and sizes. It can happen in everyday life and also in the work place. A lot of discrimination comes from ignorance, uneducated, stereotypes, and fear. These things do not excuse the behavior but are clearly things that can be changed. Some of these behaviors come from learned traits as a child and embedded in us in our upbringing. The community and media play a big part as well. The peers we surround ourselves with also influence us more then we may think. When something is different then what we are used to, the unknown scares us and placing prejudice in the place of the fear makes it easier to cope with. At which point this leads to discrimination to different degrees.…

A widely recognised fundamental human right by international law is the right to be protected from racial, sexual and religious discrimination. But during the apartheid era the South African government discriminated and implemented policies on the basis of race in the interest of white supremacy. The National Party’s policy of apartheid was formally implemented in 1948 and only dismantled in 1994 (Dissel & Kollapen, 2002). Since 1994, the government has tried to “right the wrongs of the past” and implement various policies including affirmative action, to reverse the discrimination brought on by Apartheid. This study will look at the problems we still face today regarding discrimination in the work place, as well as the background of discrimination. A quantitative study was done using a questionnaire and the results discussed. Furthermore, the limitations are discussed as well as recommendations for further research that can be conducted in this field.…
