Work speech uses specialized terms and metaphors to convey their messages across. This can prevent to people without expertise in an area from understanding a particular part of a conversation. For example, restaurants, different sports, video games, and all sorts of subjects have varying degrees of work speech. As an example, this is a conversation that I had watching the Rangers game earlier this week.
Me: If we sweep the Astros were in 1st place
Chris: I know, and the Twins are right behind us. The Astros might not even get the 2nd Wild Card Spot.
Me: I just hope we don’t play the Blue Jays in the 1st round, they crush lefties, and our rotation is full of them.

Me: Fall, Fall, Fall This is an example of work speech because it is possible that a person might not know what many of these words mean. My roommate, who is from England, had no idea what we were talking about. They use words like heifer and steer are used in their discussions, but these words are unknown to most outside of the cattle industry. I also find it interesting that lots of people don’t know of or have never seen barbed wire, cattle guards, or pumpjacks. The jargon used by my dad and others in the cattle industry is not understood by most, and is a perfect example of work speech. A person working in a big city or a location where cattle and ranches are less present are some of the people who would not understand these
