Special Issues Paper
It is crucial, especially in today’s date, to be mindful of ethnic and diverse circumstances when communicating. People interpret dialog, dialect, movements, and actions differently depending on where and how a person is raised. Gender differences can also come into play when communicating.
Ethics is important for all aspects of communication. If a person did not tell another person a bit of information that was important, this is not a lie. Does it make this an ethical decision though, knowing the other person needed that information? In this case, a person needed to be informed but the speaker refused to give information. A person may feel as if the truth were missing from the statement. It is important to be an ethical speaker while communicating so a point will be believed and gain a better response from listeners.
Culture can also affect communication in many ways. One person can be part of many different cultures. Beliefs and experiences within groups of diverse cultures will change the way a speaker must attempt to get points across to listeners. In each culture, words and action may all be interpreted differently. Miscommunications are something that nobody wants to experience during any type of communicating. A sender’s words cannot communicate the desired meaning if the receiver has not had some experience with the objects or concepts the words describe. This is what could happen if proper steps are not taken into consideration before speaking to diverse crowds.
The five principals of communication do pertain to all cultures….just in a different way. As stated earlier, different cultures have different experience making them respond to different communication styles. Unless there is deaf/mute people involved, most cultures will have a form of verbal/non-verbal way to communicate. Listening and responding will be done based on interest of what the

    People all around the world have different communication styles based on their culture legacies. I, too, am affected by my Chinese culture when I communicate with others. In the chapter “The Ethnic Theory on Plane Crashes” in Outlier, author Malcolm Gladwell discusses the importance of cultural legacy on communication.     Culture strongly influences a person's communication pattern and behaviour (Wood 2004, p. 210). Organisations are increasingly required to deal with suppliers, customers and staff from various cultural backgrounds. Therefore, Cross-cultural communication plays an important role in the workplace. The attention to contextual information varies greatly depending on culture. Hight-context cultures tend to supply very little information within messages but expect participants complete those using the context. Inversely, low-context cultures, use a more direct, brusque and explicit way of communicating (Adair, Buchan & Dong Liu 2009, p. 4). In general, it is the responsibility of the communicator to adapt to the host culture. However, in practice, it is not always feasible. When communicating in a foreign language, the user's fluency will limit his message understanding and delivery.     Communication is the key to understanding. Without communication confusion forms and chaos will soon follow. Not only is communication important but good listening skills are needed as well in order to process the communication that’s being delivered. Cross-Cultural Communication is even more challenging because along with the need for communication and good listening skills there is the need for interpretation because different words may mean different things to different cultures.     According to Cheesebro, O’Connor, and Rios (2010) “there are six principles in cross-cultural communication.” The first of these principles states that the more culture and language differences between people the more the likelihood of a communication breakdown. The second principle says when there is a communication breakdown it is often thought to be because of cultural differences. The reality is that these breakdowns are often the result of a misunderstanding. The third principle says that communicating across cultures helps you to stop and think about what you are saying and how you are saying it.
