A Reflective Account on Personal Preferences, Attitudes, Heritage, and Beliefs Might Impact Working Practice
Task C Reflective account

I work in a residential home for Dementia for the elderly, some of the clients Dementia range from mild to severe. The clients are raised in a very different way to how I was raised and it is important that I must remember this and respect their this as we all have personal beliefs and preferences based on our background and upbringing. I have been brought up in a very mixed society but in a church of England school where religious education was compulsory, however we still studied various other religions and were taught to respect all people and there beliefs. Prayers were a daily thing at the end of each assembly and whether or not I wanted to pat attention to the prayer time again I had to respect the people that did. Religion may affect people in many different ways, mainly because we all come from different backgrounds and are taught differently. However, it is important to respect how people honour their religion. I am an atheist however I still make time to talk to my clients about their religion and sometimes have prayer time with them, and when possible I take the clients to church most Sundays, even though my own beliefs it is not some thing that I choose to do as I know it makes the client happy it makes me happy to do this as I know it is some thing that they feel so strongly in and it is amazing at how much I really now look forward to going to church with them. It is part and parcel of the work that I do and part of showing the clients that we care about what makes them happy and respect their beliefs even if ours are different.
It is important to remember that my own personal preferences are different to others and I cant expect others to think, act and feel the same way as I do. For example I like to shower daily and some times twice daily, some of my clients do not like water and really do not like showers or baths I have to respect there decision if they prefer not to have one and explain if possible that it is in

Imagine growing up in a home where religion is the basis for everything you do. For instance, your father is a minister which means that you are in church 5 days a week. As you are embossed in this culture, you begin to take on the traits, beliefs and practices associated with it. You are fully immersed into your religion which now becomes second nature to you. You are taught that God helps people in need and looks out for all those who worship him. As you grow older, you believe more and more that your religious practice is what gets you through. You are now an adult and finally have the opportunity to live on your own. You’ve just been hired by a fortune 500 company and you are ecstatic because, it is your belief that God is the reason you were put in that position. As you report in to your first day of work, you realize that it is all you have ever wanted and you pray to thank God for the opportunity that he has provided you. You feel a tap on the shoulder and there is your supervisor telling you that you cannot pray in the office as it is prohibited by company rules. Many of your co-workers see this and they approach you at lunch time. They all feel your pain because they too have been told that due to company policy they also could not practice their religion at work. This is a problem. You realize that growing up in a Utilitarian environment urges you to fix this problem for the greater good of all the people working in this office. Religion should be allowed in the workplace to ensure that all people are afforded the opportunity to worship as they choose, within guidelines. Happier employees make for a better, more productive work environment.…

Religion is one of the protected categories that are protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is Act protects employees from being discriminated on the bases of race and color, national origin, religion, and sex. This Act is only in effect for companies that have more than 15 employees. Discrimination is in all aspects of a person’s employment. You cannot discriminate in the Recruiting, Hiring, Performance, Training, Wages, and Benefits. What is relevant to our situation is religious discrimination. According to this Act, you may not treat a person unfavorably because of religious beliefs (Religious Discrimination). This is relevant in our situation because we needed to make sure we accommodated him and left him off on the “Holy Day.”…

My personal preferences might impact my working practice as some of the service users only believe they need to be bathed or showered once a week, whereas I believe that they should all be bathed or showered at least twice a week to help maintain a high level of personal hygiene, some of the service users strongly disagree with this especially Mrs L, who is certain she only needs a shower or bath once a month, this conflicts with my beliefs that all service users need to be kept clean, by having a shower or bath once a month I find Mrs L to be unhygienic, however to respect Mrs L's wishes and preferences I must allow her to make her own choices, although I can try and persuade her to have a shower or bath more frequently, but this may be conflicting with her own preferences. This may affect my working practice as I may try and avoid Mrs L due to lack of personal hygiene, and therefore treat her differently to all the other service users within the home.…

It is most important to remember that my own preferences are different to others and that I can never expect others to think, act and feel the same as I do. For example, I like to bath at night and shower in the morning but some of my clients fear water and they really hate the idea of being showered, washed or bathes even once a week. I have to respect their decision but at the same time I need to encourage them to maintain a healthy and clean state of mind and body. I in cases like this will spend more time encouraging the client that they will feel better and not try and tell them how I feel when I am clean and fresh.…

I work in a nursing home for the dementia of the elderly and I understand that their upbringing and background was very different to how mine was, some of the service users have a very different view on life with their beliefs but I take into account that everyone has their own way of living and thinking for example sadly one of the services users past away last year and her close friend who also lives in the home wanted me to accompany her to her funeral in a church, even though I don’t believe in god I still took the time on my day off to take her and pay my respect and sang the songs throughout the lovely service, religion may affect people in different ways as we are taught differently and brought up in different ways by doing this it made me happy that I made a service user happy that she could attend.it is important that I remember that my personal preferences are different to others and that I can’t and will not try to change that, for example iv recently had a conversation with an elderly woman that I look after about cleanliness, she explained to me that when she was my age she only had a bath once a week and that was only on a Sunday, I explained to her my beliefs in how I have a bath daily and sometimes twice a day as that is how I was brought up, I asked her if she still would like to have a bath on a Sunday but she replied with she doesn’t really mind what day she has her bath but sometimes would like two.…

Rachel, as I was reading posts, responding to another I was drawn to scripture Galatians 6:2 that reads "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.", then to read your post next I was reminded again the importance of helping those in need, regardless of their relationship with my Lord. Everly and Lating express the importance of providing the best care to clients, including spiritual, but there may be times when as a caregiver, we must provide care to those who may not have the same relationship with God as we do. It is extremely important for me that those who care for others alongside me knows that not everyone will feel as they do but we must maintain our spiritual values and not allow their nonbelief to pull us away…

When looking at religion in the workplace I found that there were two different companies, faith-friendly companies and faith focused. Every company typically falls under one or the other because no company would admit to not accepting individuals who show their faith. Faith friendly companies create a culture in which various faiths aren't just tolerated, they are valued. Faith-friendly entails considering non-Christian religious holidays when scheduling meetings, events, and training, and creating room for employees to meditate or hold small gatherings. The goal of a faith-friendly company is to recognize the centrality of faith in many employees, inclusive, and affirming of all traditions. Similarly, faith focused describes any organization or government idea or plan based on religious beliefs, specifically Christian beliefs.…

For my cross-cultural assignment I interviewed Wally who is from The Ivory Coast located in West Africa. Wally moved to America when he was 14 years old. He is a soccer coach at the Roswell Rd Recreational Center at the current age of 18, which he has been doing for 2 years now. The typical work day as Wally described is like a party because he is constantly around kids who are full of energy. I asked Wally what encouraged him to do this line of work and his reasons were for the love that he has in soccer which is a big sport in Africa and for the cash that he makes in which he uses for himself and to help support his family. To be a coach you must know the sport in which you are coaching, how to use your players in their best abilities to make the team flow, and how to actually play the sport. Wally likes being a soccer coach because he loves the sport and likes teaching the sport to young players to better their skills. Even though he loves being a soccer coach there are still problems that he must deal with. Some consist of kids being violent and fighting and not playing together as a team but that’s what you get when you are dealing with a younger group of kids. Also the parents can be a pain as well because when their kid does not get in the game they feel as if their child is not getting the attention that they deserve. As Wally explained to me he rotates all players every game to give every kid a chance to get out there and have fun but when the game is close he puts the better players in to have a better chance of winning and also said when the game is out of reach kids get rotated more often. Overall Wally says that the people treat him good they love him being the soccer coach and feel that he does great with the kids. Since Wally was already active in soccer in The Ivory Coast the job he has now is like 2nd nature. Since Wally has been working at the rec. center he feels like he has the…
