Why Do Student Athletes Get Paid
College players need to get paid for what they do. When college players do not get paid, they do not get paid for the great things that they do on national TV. College players make more money for school playing their sport than people's salaries. Did you know that just if you make it to the NCAA BCS game, you get at least six million dollars. That's not even if you win. Sure student athletes get free things like free tuition, board, room fees, and food, but paying players would give them money for things like laundry, late night snacks, food for restaurants when on the road, and just different things. The three reasons why student athletes should get paid is because playing a college sport is like having a job, college players make money for …show more content…
This is not a cool thing to do. This is like if you did all the work for someone on a test, but instead of you getting the A, the other person gets the A. See, your probably thinking that is it not fair because it isn’t. An example is of the college football national championship bowl game. The players are the ones that get the winning record and stuff, but by just making it to the bowl game, the school makes on average 7.4 million dollars. That’s not even if you win either. Even the coaches get an average of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars along with their paycheck by just making it to a college sport championship. I mean it wouldn’t hurt to pay the players something like two thousand dollars. On a football team there are about sixty players so that's one hundred twenty thousand dollars. Compared to seven million that's nothing. Sure people might say things like:If you pay college player, they might spend their money on dumb things like liquor and maybe drugs. If you are thinking something like, I assure you that will not happen. I remember my Dad saying that there are no idiots in college. If you do something like that, and they test you for drugs and the test is positive, then you could get suspended or maybe kicked off of the team. This is why you could at least give players a small portion of the school's earnings.

In recent years the topic of college football players being paid has been widely discussed, but in reality the fact that this is even a discussion is just ridiculous. College football isn't a job, it is an extracurricular activity students can take part in while in college. Behind this common idea is college football players already are being seen as more privileged and that is not fair to other students and paying college football players will increase that perception. Also if the college football players were paid there must be an organized plan in terms of the pay structure it would it be fairly determined in terms of how to pay the football players and seeing if certain players get paid more than others. Most importantly is the immaturity…

In the article that I read I would have to agree with the author. College players should be paid, just because some of them get free education don’t mean that they shouldn’t get paid. College players are just like professional players there’s really no difference now. College athletes bring in more money than the professionals.…

In 2014, the NCAA had a gross revenue of about one billion dollars, distributing 547.1 million dollars to D1 schools. The money that D1 schools rake in from athletics is about 79% of their total income per year and helps them improve their respective school in academics, extracurricular activities, research, clubs and societies, and a multitude of other areas. Unfortunately, the athletes that bring in all this money receive absolutely no revenue and are essentially treated like slaves so that the school can prosper. Even though many people would argue that athletes should play the sport for the love of the game, their commitment, sacrifice of education, and risk of injury or permanent damage suggest they should get some compensation for their performance.…

Some fans do not want the players to be paid because they feel that the true meaning of being a college athlete would be tarnished. A large majority of people oppose paying the athletes because they see them as students (Alex Prewitt). Also, fans want the “amatuer” label to matter (Dom Amore). Spectators believe that the players could let the money affect their game (Adriano Valente). Student-Athletes could let all the money get the best of them which would lead them to forget the reason why they are playing in college (Adriano Valente). Their youth might cause them to make impulsive decisions as well. For example, former NFL first round draft pick, Travis Taylor, spent $40,000 in a furniture store after he received his first rookie paycheck (Tom Farrey). Athletes have a history of wasting their money by spending it on items that distract them from their sport. Young athletes are already prone to making bad choices, giving them money could make their choices lead to severe consequences. However, paying the athletes would help the college and the athlete. Paying college athletes now is the right thing to do because it will give those who fail to be…

The term student-athlete was created in 1964 by Walter Byers. He was the first executive president of the NCAA. He coined this term to enable his organization to counter attempts to require universities to pay workers' compensation. In layman terms, make money from extraordinary athletes and offer them a free education. Many student athletes have stated that a free education isn't enough to get by and they need compensation. The NCAA believes a free education is enough for Student athletes. There has been a long disparity among college student athletes, claiming they do not have sufficient funds for everyday necessities. The NCAA states that compensation is in place through scholarships, but this is not enough and it needs to be supplemented with payments in different ways such as endorsements etc... to college athletes, opponents to this proposition claim it would ruin amateurism and other factors. Both Sides of this topic make good points of their argument there hasn't been many…

There's a big controversy right now about athletes (especially in football) who bring in millions of dollars to university while never getting paid. Some say that the scholarship is payment enough. Others say that the athletes deserve a part of the money, and they might deserve it, but they doesn’t mean they need it. Athletes shouldn’t get part of what they make for the college.…

I used to argue vehemently against paying college athletes. Tuition, room, board and books were compensation enough. And even if, increasingly, it wasn’t enough and virtually every kid who accepted a scholarship was in the red before Christmas of his freshman year, the notion of pay-for-play was at best a logistical nightmare (Wilbon). Where would the money come from? How could you pay college football players but not baseball players or members of the women’s field hockey team?(Wilbon). Also how would pay men in a way that wouldn’t violate…

Over the past decades, what has continued to be one of the most debatable issues in the world of sports is whether or not college football players should get paid. My honest opinion is football that players should receive a certain proportion of money because of the service that college athletes provide to the institution they attend. In addition, they should be rewarded in a reasonable manner after putting their bodies out on the line, bringing in a tremendous amount of money, it will help with the football athletes to begin creating a sense of financial awareness, and finally it will attract more talented athletes.…

Maybe college athletes should get paid because they half to work really hard to get on the college teams and leagues. The players play sports a lot as kids too get into college basketball, football, lacrosse, and college soccer. College players spend a lot of time practising and planning for all of their games and they even show more hustle than the players from the NBA. This already proves that they could and should get paid. As much as we all love watching sports we also love how the different skills are like College to the NBA.But that’s not all we like, some of us even like the college players more than the NBA players but it’s not like we’re talking about the very skilled ones like Stephen Curry, Lebron James, and Chris Andersen.…

Do you think college athletes should or should not be paid? This topic has been dispute for many years now. There are many arguments about this and both sides have very strong points. I believe that college athletes should be paid because they work hard and have proven that they will work harder than their competitors and will be the best they can be. They should be paid because they work hard, they have shown they can make it in a professional league and, that they are dedicated to the sport.…

College athletes are held to a high standard, to act, perform and live like professionals. Why not pay them like professionals to? Sure you don’t have to pay them as much as professional athletes but there are a lot of reasons why student athletes should get paid rather than just the scholarship itself. When fans watch these student athletes play there is a major profit in money that the NCAA gets from the millions of people watching. Also, the students are the one playing the sport; so paying them would seem reasonable. To make it fair there are multiple ways that students could get paid and the NCAA could regulate the amount each student gets paid. Student athletes deserved to be paid in some way because the NCAA gets large amounts of money from fans watching it, it would cut down on players receiving improper benefits, and there are multiple ways that every student athlete could get paid fairly.…

So some reasons I think that college athletes should be paid are that some college athletes are unhappy with the title unfairly placed on them: amateur. College athletes should be treated as professional athletes. Their games are on T.V., and so are the professional ones. If the NCAA wanted college athletes to be considered as “amateurs”, they shouldn’t have the games that the athletes play on television. Now anybody can see them, and maybe even mistake them for professionals! I bet a lot of people would agree with me.…
