The Importance Of Paying College Athletes Get Paid
Can you imagine what it would be like if college athletes got paid? I could, especially with the help of this new article I read, written by Veronica Majerol for The New York Time Upfront. I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to know why they aren’t paid. I would say that they should be.

So some reasons I think that college athletes should be paid are that some college athletes are unhappy with the title unfairly placed on them: amateur. College athletes should be treated as professional athletes. Their games are on T.V., and so are the professional ones. If the NCAA wanted college athletes to be considered as “amateurs”, they shouldn’t have the games that the athletes play on television. Now anybody can see them, and maybe even mistake them for professionals! I bet a lot of people would agree with me.

Others might say that college athletes shouldn’t be paid because scholarships cover everything for school. Although, the scholarships often forget to cover everything. They cover most, but often do not fully cover meal plans, which can leave even a full-scholarship athlete in a mountain of debt. They might also say that not paying college athletes is the proper thing to do because it isn’t like they are on a professional sports team. I would say otherwise. College sport are not technically considered ‘professional’, but they should be. Awesome players, working together on an awesome team, against other awesome players, working together on another awesome team. Combine that with the fact that their sports are on TV, and it sounds professional to me, and probably to a lot of other people

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. In conclusion, college athletes should be paid. As previously stated in the words of NCAA President Mark Emmert, “I think not paying athletes is tradition and also there would be less fans at games if they were paid.” Paying athletes would not cause fewer fan to attend games. Many would also say that college sports exist not to make a profit, but to create a community between the different universities. Throwing money at the players would change the mindset of the players making them think as if they are professional players, changing the amateur status. Another big problem with this is, not every college sport is considered as popular as football and basketball. “It’s unfair and wrong to pay football and men’s basketball players because they participate in a sport that generates millions of dollars in revenue but does not pay the thousands upon thousands of student-athletes competing for their schools in other sports” (College athletes shouldn’t get paid). Will all college athletes be given a paycheck? “There is no system of payment that can be put in place that is fair across the board for all students, all sports and all schools that participate in college athletics” (Jackson). These things can only result in…

Therefore, the issue becomes should only football and basketball college athletes be paid? (Patterson, 2016). Also, how would you choose who gets paid what and where does the money come from? Who should pay the athletes the colleges or television networks or does it come from an outside source? In my opinion just like I stated before they should be paid but I do think that it might be hard to accomplish this because what about the students before them and the ones before them. What do they have to say if colleges start paying players and left them out of the…

“An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head-Emil Zatopek.” This quote shows that if you're happy playing your favorite sport then money should be the last thing you should be worried about. Some student athletes feel that they bring in a great deal of money to their universities, but they do not see one penny of it. These students think they should be getting paid because they put a great deal of their time and effort into playing.
