Why Do Student Athletes Get Paid?
The term student-athlete was created in 1964 by Walter Byers. He was the first executive president of the NCAA. He coined this term to enable his organization to counter attempts to require universities to pay workers' compensation. In layman terms, make money from extraordinary athletes and offer them a free education. Many student athletes have stated that a free education isn't enough to get by and they need compensation. The NCAA believes a free education is enough for Student athletes. There has been a long disparity among college student athletes, claiming they do not have sufficient funds for everyday necessities. The NCAA states that compensation is in place through scholarships, but this is not enough and it needs to be supplemented with payments in different ways such as endorsements etc... to college athletes, opponents to this proposition claim it would ruin amateurism and other factors. First it would go against Title 9 law that makes sure that all athletes collegiate level and down should be treated equally male or female, so if there was pay for play schools would lose in other departments. Secondly supporters of no play for pay think that it would ruin college sports, the leagues would be to predictable or uncompetitive since the wealthiest colleges will get the most talented recruits. It would rebrand Walter Byers term “student athlete” that was made specifically to state their compensation is through scholarships. Coaches of these athletes have seen first hand the lives of their players many come from poor families and many say that education is good but there needs to be more. ”Students need to experience earning money honestly and legally, in addition to getting good grades”(Neuharth).
