The Influence Of A Servant Leader
Leadership in its simplest form is influence. Influence is defined as, “The act or power of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command,” or, “The power or capacity of causing an effect in indirect or intangible ways.” This is making a difference in the actions and even thought process of the people around you, without trying. I believe this makes anyone and everyone capable of being or becoming a leader and therefore obliges us to act and live in a responsible way so we are a positive influence on those under our leadership and set a good example for those who are looking to us. We do not even realize who we may have an effect. It is our responsibility as leaders to constantly be checking our attitudes and checking how our influence is affecting those around us. Asking, ‘Is my attitude helping to make my environment a better place or making it a worse place?’ I believe in service. I believe every leader should be doing everything they can to serve those under their leadership. ‘This means caring for those under your leadership more than you care for yourself. Leadership is based upon values that define who we are as a person and as a leader. These values are: loyalty to the people I serve and who look up to me; respect to everyone I come in contact with; selflessness, thinking of myself less and others more; being honest with anyone and everyone; being a leader filled with integrity and doing the right thing all the time; and being held accountable for ones’ actions and decisions. These values shape and define the ways we treat all of the people around us and anyone under our leadership. Treating everyone with these values influences those around you to do the same, creating a culture where everyone is valued and respected.
