What Is Servant Leadership?
There are many theories on leadership as well as characteristics that recognize the leader from a non-leader. In leadership, there can be one who can manage others but is not necessarily a good leader. On the other hand, on can be a good manager but not a good leader. “Transformational Leadership Theory - assume the fact that people will follow an individual who inspires them, a person with vision and passion who can lead them in the right direction, and can help them achieve great things” (Alina, 2013). The servant leadership theory was first originated by Robert Greenleaf and has been considered the author of this opinion. For example, when promoting growth in the organization, in the individual development and values, it will not resolve goal conflict. Goal conflict under servant leadership puts emphasis on one's needs and aspirations and will try to make employees perform the organizational needs through inspiration. But sometimes it does not work because it does not effectively resolve issues between the individual and the organization. Studies have shown when one interacts with others create a stable relationship resulting in trust that will lead to motivation in both leader and follower (Johns & Moser, 1989). Several theories discuss the how effective the different leadership is. One can say the best leadership style is one who has followers who are satisfied and the task completed well. Research has suggested, “that servant leadership is more acceptable than authoritative leadership and that servant leadership is more effective because it reflects a better use of leaders' power” (Zhang, Lin & Suan, 2012). Organizations are increasingly changing their attitudes toward people, relationships, and leadership (Schwantes, 2015). Leadership means different things to different people depending on the organization. It can be from being and advocate for people in the non-profit sector to the private sector. Greenleaf’s definition of servant leadership is one which is based on teamwork and community while seeking to involve others in the decision making and is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior while enhancing the growth of people (Spears, 1996).
