Summer Bridge Writing Class Reflection
“What do you expect to achieve in UVI’s Summer Bridge Writing Class Xavier?” mom asked.
“I am not too sure, but I know I plan to pass my placement test for sure by writing good essays like I always do” I said. I honestly did not expect to have to work hard in my writing class until the second day in Dr Harkins-Pierre’s class. On my first day, I had to construct a narrative essay based on the day I came in second place for a modeling competition. It consisted of a prewrite containing a cluster chart as well as an outline. I used the outline as a guide throughout my essay and successfully completed my narrative-at least I thought I did. On the second day, I received my paper and I was shocked by my grade. My seventy made me realize what I had to do. By the end of Dr PHP’s writing class, I expected to generate more ideas for my cluster charts, create proper outlines, and obtain an essay grade of an eighty-five or higher.

That was probably the reason to why I had writers block every so often. In Dr PHP’s class, I struggled at making them. It would have taken me at least fifteen minutes to create a basic cluster chart and that was bad timing. I needed to fix this and so I did thanks to Dr. PHP. My favorite teacher taught me and my class how to generate ideas for a cluster chart by assigning us different topics that taught us how to make a correct chart. After this lesson, I learned how to effectively generate more ideas for my cluster chart. Doing so, made it easier for me to create an

Nursing has been given the idea that a lot of writing is not needed after nursing school, but that assumption is incorrect. Nurses have a lot of daily task, many of them need good writing and comprehension skills which can be developed in English 101 and English 102 classes. Core classes in general will help and the foundations that are taught in those two classes can help make one successful in any career, nursing included. Nursing needs writing in these tasks: creating a daily plan for the patient, writing prescriptions (depending on which position of a nurse), creating a plan for the patient after being discharged, and for communication through emails. With the help received in English 101 and the help I will be receiving in English 102…

    Why I Hate Writing

On the first day of class, Dr.Ruiz wrote six questions on the board and the last question asked for our perspective on writing. My answer to this question was “I hate writing.” I’m an English Learner who came to the U.S. 5 years ago with no knowledge in English. Therefore, writing is not a likable assignment due to my lack of English skills and I did not have confidence when I wrote in English because I had a fear of people’s judgment about my English. Therefore, I was not an advanced writer when I enrolled in WRI 001. Nevertheless, I have grown substantially since beginning of the semester as a reader, writer, researcher and thinker.…

My former English professor would always say “find a way 101”, whenever a student found themselves struggling in her class. At first I did not understand why she was so rude to her students, this was until after I graduated high school when I realized I was wrong. She was not rude, she was not mean, she was preparing her students for college level English classes. Reflecting on my past encounter with the toughest teacher at my former high school, I can say I feel prepared for a college level class. Although I may have taken the most rigorous class in high school, that does not mean I am expected to pass without falling short. However, I am certain that I am ready for the challenges that my professor will assign me in the fall.…

My current interests include participating in art, specifically sketching and water-color painting. I started taking up interest in art a few years back and I continue to practice to develop my skills and ease into peacefulness. I also spend my time biking around different areas within Jacksonville. It is a time where I get to appreciate my surroundings and experience some exercise. When taking the course AP English Language and Composition, my qualities include being able to analyze text to find meaning and author’s purpose. It’s useful for understanding the text and help me during my exam; furthermore, I am able to write a proper formal essay with the skills I learned from last year. For instance, I know how to write proper introductions,…

I have learned much in my 11 years in California public school. I learned to write in cursive; I learned my times tables; I learned the equation for a line, and I learned a thing or two about Shakespeare. However, the most important thing I learned is that is that the Common Core doesn’t work. The Common Core Standards Initiative is an approach to keep all American students on the same page. The problem is that it keeps all of us on page 1. In my AP Calculus BC class, my 13 classmates and I are piloting a Common Core textbook. At first, everyone was excited to try something new, but now we groan at the sight of the textbook. While I passed the AP test for the first year of Calculus, it has been a challenge “reviewing” these concepts in the new style. Why change a system that was proven to be successful? California, one of the last states to implement Common Core, actually made a change for the worse. Therefore, I strongly believe that the 28th amendment to the Constitution should be the nationwide abolishment of Common Core.…

One of my more enriching experiences occurred during my freshman year of high school. For years, I strove for straight A's, and for years I received them. Over time I constructed a mentality, and underlying self-confidence that I would receive an A no matter what. Due to my over-confidence, I was under the impression that I would not have to put forth much effort; however, near the conclusion of the second semester, I had a B in Pre-AP English 9. Despite my last push to earn a 90% in the class with the concluding assignments of the semester, my grade was finalized lower than I had wished for. It felt as if a five pound ball of lead materialized in the pit of my stomach. This experience, at first, devastated me to the fullest extent, and I…

Throughout this course, I have had to write a number of essays using a variety of techniques. The concept and cause and effect essays are the two main papers I will use to make an evaluative analysis of the outcomes I have learned, utilizing the writing process in Basic Writing I, with expectations of receiving the grade of at least a “B” on my portfolio. This course helped me realize the many steps that are involved in the writing process from gathering ideas to making a final copy. In order to create a good paper you need to organize your ideas. However, I find it tedious to have to connect those ideas; yet, I want my paper to be cohesive and organized.…

The prompt presented within the first week of the new semester was to compose an essay about myself. The first thing that came to mind was the simple fact I was going to fail. I had to ask several questions before even completely understanding the requirements. We had to evaluate who we were, why we were here, and how Mr. Henthorn could be of service to us. I worked for many days composing this essay; including many rough drafts and bad ideas. The first part of the prompt was by far the hardest, it took the most thinking. Prewriting consisted mainly of sitting around trying to figure out who I actually thought I was. I wrote about 3 rough drafts before deciding on how I was going to present myself. After finally liking one draft, I did numerous amounts of editing. The editing process was difficult for me because I did not want to mess up my very first essay and make a bad first impression. Revising the essay was much simpler with help from peers. The benefits of using a formatted writing process are ultimately what lead to my higher grade. This process helps to organize, edit, and write with ease during difficult assignments. To better organize I wrote many drafts and bulleted list of important ideas to include, which helped to be sure I included all necessary points. Editing was made easier by my peers who read over the essay and gave me feedback from different perspectives to improve the flow and structure of the essay. And lastly, the ease of writing the final draft came from this described process used. Without this…

Having previously moved through this course, my perception regarding literacy had evolved somewhat identifying that there is a lot of components with integration of literacy and text. Throughout this course, it is evident that what I knew in comparison to what I learned has strongly been improved. During this course, I was on placement and I could acknowledge the learning throughout the course and see what is carried out within a classroom. I feel that this greatly improved my ability to gain perspective from a real-world point of view.…

Revising has always been part of my development process for writing. When I was taught by my high school teachers to use “linear structure” in AP Language and Literature, I felt my ideas and skills were restricted. Like Nancy Sommers states in her essay, “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers,” I too believe that the process of rewriting is not only an opportunity to edit technical errors, but also to “discover meaning altogether” (384). The original drafts of my first two essays were merely a translation of outlined ideas into vaguely structured paragraphs with multiple grammatical errors. I highly value revising because the more I reconsider aspects of my essays, the more clearly I understand how to communicate…
