Writers use many tactics to get across to their readers. In order to get the moral of the story or the overall theme of the book, they might write about the main character reaching an epiphany of some sort that reveals the focus of the story. Writers tend to end their story with a happy ending in which the main character experiences a spiritual reassessment or a moral reconciliation. In Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, the main character, Scarlett O'Hara, undergoes a spiritual reassessment and moral reconciliation.…

In Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream (1963)” speech, he addresses the idea that in order to fulfill the premise that “all men were created equal,” the people of the nation must work together to move past the injustices inflicted on African Americans in order to ultimately grant them their civil rights. King’s claim is supported by first repeatedly alluding to historically renowned milestones in the fight against oppression and illustrating numerous metaphors to create an emotional connection with his audience. King’s “dream” that he frequently mentions is the nationwide unification to work toward a common goal in order to bring integration of all races and coexist without oppression. By establishing his goal, he creates an earnest tone for the people of America working toward cutting the “manacles of segregation and chains of discrimination.”…

One of my more enriching experiences occurred during my freshman year of high school. For years, I strove for straight A's, and for years I received them. Over time I constructed a mentality, and underlying self-confidence that I would receive an A no matter what. Due to my over-confidence, I was under the impression that I would not have to put forth much effort; however, near the conclusion of the second semester, I had a B in Pre-AP English 9. Despite my last push to earn a 90% in the class with the concluding assignments of the semester, my grade was finalized lower than I had wished for. It felt as if a five pound ball of lead materialized in the pit of my stomach. This experience, at first, devastated me to the fullest extent, and I…

With a vigorous attitude towards the area of Language Arts, I am most attentive in learning and progressing in this area of study. In all honesty, I was not as interested in this area a year ago, but by experiencing my AP Language and Composition class throughout my junior year, my perspective of the Language Arts has altered. Furthermore, I read, write, and try to enhance my vocabulary when I can. Throughout my English course, I have not received any noble awards for greatness, yet I do have an A in my AP Language and Composition class and have surpassed to have the highest grade for the semester. By considering me to be a part of AGS, I will fulfill my duties and obligations provided to me by AGS, and will commit to the designated responsibilities.…

In high school, during my senior year, I took the Advanced Placement class, English Language and Composition. During the course of this class, and when we would write essays, we took time to go over the appropriate punctuation needed for these essays and how to accurately place the certain punctuation marks. In my General Studies Writing class at Bowling Green, we did not take part in learning any punctuation. We also did not review any form of this. I actually find it slightly strange that we did not do this during the class, considering both that class and this English 111 class use the same textbook. I don’t have anything against punctuation review. I actually enjoy it, and find it beneficial. There are things I have been confused on or I did not know how to accurately place the punctuation, and I find doing practice exercises and reviewing will help.…

I have always struggled in writing original composition essays due to my inability to put my thoughts down on paper. Because of this I always take far too long coming up with ideas to write about and end up using all my writing time, leaving me with no time to write a well-written essay. However, this year my English 12 teacher has challenged the whole class by assigning multiple in-class essays with short time limits in the first two months of school, making us think more quickly, but also write more efficiently. I have seen a vast improvement in my writing since the very first essay we were assigned to the most current one. Especially during my thinking process, I could feel as if I was getting my thoughts on the paper much clearer than I…

One should assume that in taking an Intro to English course that they would be formally and informally introduced to English. However, that assumption escaped me. I didn’t know that we would explore so many avenues for English as a major, but I’m pleased that we did. This journey through the various areas of English has both enlightened me and piqued my interest. While I entered into this course feeling very confident with the path that I wanted to travel, I am now a bit more open-minded about additional ways to reach my destination; which is English Education.…
