Literacy Course Reflection
Having previously moved through this course, my perception regarding literacy had evolved somewhat identifying that there is a lot of components with integration of literacy and text. Throughout this course, it is evident that what I knew in comparison to what I learned has strongly been improved. During this course, I was on placement and I could acknowledge the learning throughout the course and see what is carried out within a classroom. I feel that this greatly improved my ability to gain perspective from a real-world point of view.
Alternatively, I have witnessed how integrated multimodal components to the classroom assists lower level learners greatly. It also engaged students with memory disorders and active learners.

I have enjoyed tutoring students through the Literacy Corps for nearly two years. The program has helped push me outside of my comfort zone by leading and teaching students. Without challenging myself, I would never have been able to establish a connection with the many students and teachers in the Syracuse area that I have today. I greatly value these connections and relationships, which have helped further my learning experience in college.…

Villanueva is successful now despite all the times his professors criticized his work because he applied the advice. Another point I was able to truly grasp through the readings is that the use of literacy will have a great impact on my job opportunities as well as any time I am speaking to someone with greater importance. “it is not just how you say it, but what you are and do when you say it.” (Gee 2) This is something that truly made me think and see how I could apply it to my everyday life. What came to my understanding is that actions as well as word use have a great impact on the situation. I believe the use of language changes throughout different situations and is also affected depending on the people who are present in that situation. For example, I want to become a Registered Nurse, eventually when the time comes to apply to the nursing program I will not use the same language as I would while texting or talking to close family or friends. Lastly, another concept I was able to acquire because of this course is motivation. Before coming into English 101 I never thought who my literacy sponsors were and why I was where I am today.…

I have learned much in my 11 years in California public school. I learned to write in cursive; I learned my times tables; I learned the equation for a line, and I learned a thing or two about Shakespeare. However, the most important thing I learned is that is that the Common Core doesn’t work. The Common Core Standards Initiative is an approach to keep all American students on the same page. The problem is that it keeps all of us on page 1. In my AP Calculus BC class, my 13 classmates and I are piloting a Common Core textbook. At first, everyone was excited to try something new, but now we groan at the sight of the textbook. While I passed the AP test for the first year of Calculus, it has been a challenge “reviewing” these concepts in the new style. Why change a system that was proven to be successful? California, one of the last states to implement Common Core, actually made a change for the worse. Therefore, I strongly believe that the 28th amendment to the Constitution should be the nationwide abolishment of Common Core.…

The essay that I believe could become greatly improved upon with more revision is my research paper, “Who’s Putting the Care in Foster Care.” I think I felt a little under pressure from the daunting shadow of finals that December brings, reflecting on my essay as a mass amount of careless errors. With more time, I could not only more thoroughly proofread my essay, as I should have done previously, but also expand certain lacking areas of my essay. These lacking areas target my introduction and conclusion. The beginning and closing of an essay has always been a struggle for me, however, for some reason it was exceptionally more difficult for me on my research paper. In addition, a key point for improvement is in what was facading as a hook, “All children are deserving of growing up in a safe and nurturing home, but as we all know, this is not the reality of what happens.” This is…

In the beginning of this chapter, Bean states that the number of literacy coaches has fallen off in the past few years, but that coaching is one of the “key approaches to improving teacher practice and ultimately, student learning” (138). I was grateful to the author for including this information. Currently, I am quite frustrated with the reduction in staffing of educators. I certainly see the benefits of having a literacy coach who has the knowledge needed, time to work with other teachers, collaborative relationships, and supports the learning focuses of students (139).…

In this module on the IRIS resource site, we further explore curriculum-based measurement. To review CBM is similar to other progress monitoring measurements in that teachers can use assessment results to evaluate their own instruction effectiveness as well as students’ progress. However curriculum based measurement offers an assessment procedure that is easily and quickly implemented. Furthermore the results of this assessment offer a clear representation of how students are progressing throughout the school year. The results can be used to track progress throughout the school year and determine which students may need more instruction. In addition to providing educators with accessible information regarding the students, curriculum based measurements offer educators to share the progress with the student, parents or other professionals.…

Jim Henson once said, “Kids don't remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.” Teaching doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be smart, you have to be a teacher or professor. Being a good and intellectual person does make you belong. A program named Literacy Training Program (LTS) will help you acquire those required qualifications in order to possess an effective teaching even without getting a bachelor’s degree. LTS is one of the means for us students to help those in need as well as for us to contribute to society by aiding these people to become better citizens.…
