Assessment 2: Understanding Language and Literacy

Orson is a two and half year old boy playing outside with his dad in the garden and exploring the environment after looking at the trees, leaves etc. The child interest is captured by a wooden structure which his dad described him as a castle. Orson happily accepted that wooden structure as a castle. The conversation between Orson and his dad is enjoyable, positively engage Orson and enhance Orson language development skills.
During the conversation, Orson demonstrates several areas of language development such as, Orson uses facial expression, copy word to word of his dad and expressing his feeling or thoughts when he was talking with his dad and expressing himself by saying that he wants a burger for lunch. Orson can also use 2-3 words together, basic sentences and phrases and started structuring his sentences for example, “I am on top”, “What that”. Orson is also able to ask the question and able to understand and respond to the question.
The other areas of development are by touching and feeling the texture of the castle he is developing his sensory skills, by engaging in a positive conversation with his dad builds up his social skills and make him confident, by taking his own decision like what he wants for his lunch make Orson independent and develop his language development skills, and he learns to communicate what he wants, by communicating with his dad he became comfortable in his thoughts and express himself.
STRATEGIES:
In terms of early childhood setting to extend the child’s language and literacy development we can use different strategies based on child interest and strengths and it should be linked to an early year’s learning framework (EYLF).
Dramatic Play: To continue with the castle theme Orson and his friends can play in the castle and they can pretend they are in the castle and they can put different dresses on
