This report will reflect upon a direct planning of learning activities for early year’s children. The report is aimed at planning and delivering of learning activities that supports children development through prime and specific areas of the early year’s foundation stage framework and also justifying how planning meet individual needs, adhere to appropriate policy and legislation, promote inclusion and support progression. (EYFS 2014). Our planning is focussed on the prime area of the EYFS “Communication and language: listening and attention”. However planning should give practitioner the opportunity to discuss and review children’s development. Planning, teaching and evaluation follow a cycle which gives structure to the learning process.

The planning also covered for the fact that curriculum structures have become more structured. Thus, this plan also set out to ensure early year learners do not lose interest in the learning process. The current plan is based on the principles of continuous provision and unrestricted access to activities. Through continuous provision, the plan intended to empower the early learners to discover more lively and recent learning processes, practice new skills and indulge in activities that excite and interest them (Brighouse et al., 2008). Besides continuous learning activities, the plan also use adult-initiated and adult-directed, focused sessions, a combined approach that enables teachers to build adult-led activities. Through adult-led activities, early learners are granted the chance to improve their skills, confidences, and knowledge by presenting enough learning opportunities and room for independence (Foundationyears.org.uk,

    Planning can help practitioners with the daily running of the setting and the activities which take place within. It also helps meet the children’s care, learning and physical needs, as they can keep a record of the child’s progress and easily put activities in place to develop the child’s individual skills further e.g. cutting activity’s to develop fine mother skills and scissor skills. “Good planning is the key to effective learning. It enables practitioners to develop a knowledge and understanding of how individual children learn and progress” ( Macleod-Brudenell and Kay, 2008, p314). If the practitioner observes the child before implementing activities, then the planning can be more accurate because they have watched activities and observed the skills of the child. From that, they can work out the stage of the development of the child and how to help the child progress further.     The central focal point for this discussion is based on an observation (see appendix 1), that led to the planning and implementation of a group learning experience (see appendix 2), designed to aid children’s development and encourage playful participation in-line with EYFS learning objectives. Beckley (2012), proposes three reasons to for carrying out observations, for the purposes I will review the first two with the intention of discussing the context of the learning experience that caused the observation to be recorded. In considering the children who took part in the activity, attention will be focused on their different developmental age and stages, focusing on their physical and personal social and emotional development. The current EYFS (2008) and the revised EYFS framework (2012) will act as a guide for assessing their current development as well as discussing next steps. Theories of how children learn will be explored when evaluating the observation, with comparisons made between Piaget and Vygotsky’s theories of play. In giving a rational for the group learning experience (the bubble activity), I will explore the individual needs of the children and the role of the practitioner when carrying out adult-led activities. Clear objectives for strategies and techniques adopted to encourage children to participate will show knowledge of the importance of inclusiveness practice.
