Matthew is a senior at UNC who is studying business. He is twenty-three years old and was born in America. So what ties Matt to a specific culture? From the ages of 6-13 he was a resident of Quito, Ecuador, a country in South America. Studies have shown that significant growth takes place in early-mid childhood, and as Matt was growing up and developing his identity, he was embracing the culture specific to Ecuador. Matt and his family traveled to Ecuador to complete missionary work with Compassion International, therefore embracing the Christian religion, while adapting his lifestyle to both Spanish and English customs. Through a detailed interview Matt was able to provide information specific to Ecuador’s cultural values, traditions, and ways of life.…

As a part of this course, I was asked to interview a special education administrator based on the concepts covered in the class. The administrator I chose is Anne Stokowski, my current principal. Anne is someone who I’ve known for the past three years. She has been an integral part in my growth as a school leader. She has provided me several opportunities to lead various committees in the school and encouraged me to pursue my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Ms. Stokowski promotes a school of excellence, encourages collaboration and inclusion, and is knowledgeable about special education as well as providing support for all students.…

Focus group is a form of group interview to get in depth understanding of the topic (Bryman, 2012). Researchers are particularly interested in the way participants respond to each other’s views and joint construction of meaning (Bryman, 2012). There are several practical elements that are needed to conduct focus group research, such as group size, recording, transcription, selection of participants and questions. Barbour (2007) suggests that maximum of eight are most suitable because larger group will increase unnecessary complexity such as difficulty distinguishing voices in audio recording. Fair & Walker (2011) have also decided to use eight pediatric HIV social workers for their focus group. However, Litosseliti (2003) suggests that group…

According to the United States Census report in 2010, there were 38.9 million African Americans in the United States. This total makes up 12.6% of the entire population and was a 12% increase from the last ten years. African Americans still lag behind white or Asian Americans in overall educational attainment but with 14% attaining a four-year degree and 5% with advanced degrees they are still higher than most other minorities. More African American women attend and complete college than men ("African Americans," 2013). I selected this group because I am currently teaching in Newport News public schools where the majority of my students are members of this group. In order to become a better educator I wanted to have a better insight into this group.…

It is important that patients’ perspectives are addressed in order to be able to assess the value of medical interventions, especially in situations where there are no agreed upon biomarkers or only the patient has knowledge of the benefit from the treatment (Brédart, Marrel, Abetz-Webb, Lasch, & Acquadro, 2014). A patient-reported outcome (PRO) is defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as any report that comes directly from the patient regarding the status of their health condition that has not been interpreted by a clinician or anyone else (FDA, 2009). The outcome is able to be measured as either a change from a previous measure or in absolute terms. PRO measures can provide a measurement of patients’ perspectives on their symptoms…

For the majority of my high school career I dealt with my Father neglecting my two older brothers and myself. It seemed normal for him to leave unannounced for multiple days with minimal food in the fridge. Whenever I asked about his whereabouts he would state that I am merely a minor, so I did not need to know where he was going or what he was doing. If I ever attempted to call his cell phone at late hour he would reject the call or convince me he would be home soon – which was usually a lie.…

Throughout my life, my strengths and weaknesses tend to gain more clarity, as I grow older. When I was younger, I did not focus too much on this part of myself. I was interested in child things. I must now use my strengths to improve my weaknesses to strengthen my faults. Several of my strengths are centered on my profession because the majority of my time is spent there. Some of my qualities are beneficial to different situations, while the other qualities hinder. Although we describe our strengths as positive attributes and our weaknesses as negative attributes, they make us who and what we are as individuals. Because of these qualities, each of us is unique in different ways. It is important to be conscious not just our personal strengths, but also our weaknesses, so we can inquire about help in the areas we need strengthening. Acquiring a better understanding of these qualities will help me get closer to graduating and obtaining my Bachelor 's of Business Management.…
