Personal Narrative: Homecoming Court
I shot my shot at my girlfriend on a basketball court, I kid you not.

This time last year I was a senior at the University of Illinois and it was our Homecoming. This meant we all ran around looking for an occasion to be a college student, interpret that however you may like. I was given the wonderful opportunity to serve on the 2015 Homecoming Court with 19 other outstanding seniors selected based on their campus involvement, merit and community service. I was in a parade, got to wear a cool sash and was in the halftime of the football game. But this wasn't nearly as eventful as how this homecoming weekend ended.

In the evening of October 24, 2015, I was gearing up to close the weekend at the infamous CRCE party. A party hosted at one of the campus' recreational facilities, almost high school-esque, but that's okay! I was previously "talking" to a young lady that I was very exclusive with, mistake one. I would like to emphasize that we were "talking". While this is a very ambiguous term, it basically meant that I knew where home was, mistake 2. If we're being completely honest, it

She asked me where her ticket was to the CRCE party. I was really uncomfortable with this because I felt like she cared more about this party than she did me. Especially because she only showed up to one of the Homecoming Court events I invited her to. I had three unclaimed CRCE tickets laying on my coffee table, but something deep inside of me told me not to tell her about those tickets. Till this day I am 100% sure that was God almighty. I told her that I didn't know she wanted to go to the party, which was true. She pulled out her phone and showed text messages that said absolutely nothing about her wanting to come to the party or asking me to secure a ticket for her. I did anyway because what kind of person would I be to invite her out there to only sit around while I went a

A time when I took the lead in solving a problem in my community was when I chose my Eagle Project. I wanted my project to impact as many people as possible and I also wanted to give back to the organization that had sponsored my scout troop for so long. I looked over the church grounds and found a need. The church, borders the Harpeth River in Franklin, TN and members can choose to have baptisms done in the river. The problem that existed was that the baptismal site wasn’t safe for those partaking in it or viewing it. The riverbank is steep and there wasn’t a safe place for families to view the event. An old triangular deck was present, but it was small, not adequately anchored and had poorly attached rope rails. My goal was to construct a…

One day in a place far away from south Michigan, a kid named Evan was running in a long race. It was an estimated 26 miles. It was his first race that he has ever participated in. I was a percussionist during my high school tenure. As a school musician during my freshman year, I was in the high school band at both Northwest Christian and Dayton Christian. I went to Northwest during the first two quarters of my freshman and the high school band only had one concert, Then, I switched over to Dayton Christian during the last two quarters of my freshman year. The Dayton Christian High School Band was much larger than Northwest’s and performed two concerts, one at the Dayton Christian Cafeteria, and one out at Cedarville University. During my sophomore year at Dayton Christian, I was part of the high school band and the pep band. I was a bass drummer during pep band season; we performed at a stadium in Monroe every home football…

A day in Memphis is not complete without the diversity in our community. As a second generation Memphian who has primarily lived in Midtown, I had the privilege of watching several different cultures in one place and especially now that I attended one of the largest public schools. Daily, I experience someone else’s world. The people I get to meet and see are from various backgrounds: race, religion, ethnicity, etc. that I may never comprehend, which is wonderful. In Memphis, it is normal to be an enigma, to have idiosyncrasies. I believe that is the heart of Memphis. What makes this heart surpass discrimination is the acceptance that follows years of diversity. My neighborhood has single mothers whose children play with the neighborhood adolescents.…

The Civil War legacy still has an impact on Americans today. Today, most Americans look at the Civil War in an awe-inspired perspective. People try to skip over the blood and ugliness that resulted because of it, and instead try to focus on the courage and heroic deeds that soldiers performed. Many today are more likely to view the war as a fight for black freedom instead of for state’s rights, which is what it had previously been known for. The South still seems proud of the Confederate flag, even though it is the cause of a lot of controversy. Some people view it as part of their heritage. Certain topics of the Civil War are still well-known throughout society. Abraham Lincoln, the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation proclamation are all examples of what people associate with the Civil War. People try to remember iconic people and images like these, instead of the blood, gore, and hate that took place.…

If I could continue to participate in any activity through my university years, I would choose to publications. The school yearbook was the most fun I ever had during my high school years. I enjoyed every part of the process of making the yearbook, from taking pictures to editing them, to interviewing my classmates to writing about them. Everything that I had to do was so enjoyable. The best part was leaving my mark on something lasting. In this age of technology, there is not much that lasts beyond the digital world, and flipping through a solid book, that I put work into creating, was enlightening for me. My time on the yearbook staff seems fleeting, and I wish that it could last I bit…

“East High is a place where teachers encouraged us to break the status quo and define ourselves as we choose. Where a jock can cook up a mean crème brûlée, and a brainiac can break it down on the dance floor. It's a place where one person, if it's the right person, changes us all. East High is having friends we'll keep for the rest of our lives, and that means we really are 'all in this together'. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!” Troy Bolton. Although I am not a student at East High from the movie High School Musical, this quote sums up my experience at North Kingstown High School. Like the students from the movie, I was encouraged to be myself and along the way I created life-long friendships and many memories.…

During my freshman year of high school I received a letter in the mail. This letter was an invitation to play basketball in Australia, with other boys and girls of my age. The date was September 13, 2011. The letter stated that we would be leaving June 1, of 2012. Of course I wanted to go as soon as I read the letter, but my family was more curious about the trip. We did some research and figured out everything that would be offered on this trip. In my research I read of playing Australian basketball games, snorkeling, swimming in the ocean, surfing, and spending three days on Tangalooma Island. This was enough to convince my family that it would indeed be a fun trip for me to attend.…

My life has been a series of obstacles. I see that as we get older we become wiser, but life never gets any easier. When we reach the end of an experience we take to heart the memories throughout the whole experience. People say "high school goes by quick" and " it's just a small part of your life." The experience of high school really shapes the way we deal with hardships and failure.…

When I was seven years old, I went on a field trip to the Jim Cherry Memorial planetarium in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme that day was travelling thru space, they enhanced the experience by making the sets moving. It was astonishing, how something so far away seems so contiguous. At that moment, I knew that I had to learn more. I went home that same day and ask my mom what all she knew about space, but she did not know very much. The following day, I started doing my research when I was capable of doing so. I remember wishing for some to tell me more. Since then, I always wonder what goes on in space while I am down here.…

During resource period, I met up with my friends and we went to the library, our usual hangout. While we were doing our usual rounds of discussing Pokémon and debating on which Star Trek captain was superior (It’s Kirk), the girl I liked walked in. My friends, being the exceptionally mood killing beasts they are, pushed me towards her. I bumped into her and made her drop her books on the floor. I hurriedly picked them up for her and apologized. She laughed it off. We somehow got into a conversation about…

We were really close at those times, so I used to spend a lot of time at her place, communicating regularly with her parents, her sister and her grandparents. I need to confess: I was extremely jealous of her having such a great family. They all were just wonderful. It is not that I don’t have a good family of my own, it is just that they were absolutely amazing. They were all as close as best friend, with the differences in age and gender being completely ignored. I understood Christine perfectly well when on the Saturday night she preferred to be with her family instead of visiting some sort of a party. I had always readily accepted her invitations to spent time with her and her family when I got one, and always had a great time indeed. Their relationships were amazingly natural and easy. I cannot remember their having some serious quarrel for even once. They were all equal in their little world of mutual trust and understanding. The idyll I…
