Personal Narrative: A Career In Speech Pathology
Before this year, I never really had career goals. I was always jealous of my peers that seemed to have their whole lives planned out, while I hopped from one career path to another, never able to make up my mind. At first I tried pediatrics, then I thought maybe an attorney, or a physician's assistant? I had no clue. The only thing that had guided me thus far was my desire to have a career that was a little "off the beaten path" but at the same time gave me a platform to help others. I found this in Speech Pathology. While a speech pathologist is not that crazy of a gig, I enjoy the fact that I can work in a lot of diverse environments with all ages of people. I was drawn to speech pathology because of the rehabilitation aspect, getting to

I knew that I would probably go to college some where in state, come back to our little town and work as a nurse or in an office like my mom or nana. My computer teacher had us go on a website and answer a couple of questions to see what my range of my possibilities is, and of course one of the first ones was a nurse and human resources. Then I started looking deeper into the possibilities I had. The two I found most interesting were Epidemiology and Sociology. Both sounded very intriguing and in both professions I would be able to help people. I started to look at epidemiology, I noticed that if I would work really hard at it I would be able to work at the CDC (Center for Disease Control). It looked very interesting and the job outlook is very high. So my chances of getting a job is very likely. But as I looked for jobs at the CDC there was next to nothing. I still decided to do the presentation on it though. The presentation was very fun but presenting was a little scary. As the year progressed though I learned that in order for me to be able to become an epidemiologist I would have to enter an internship for at least a year then work my way up from a small college lab to the CDC. I would not end up in my dream work space until I am about thirty five to forty years old. So I started looking into sociology, and became very…

Looking at my reasons for embarking in this program overall, has been rather interesting to me. After graduating from my High School in the Bronx, I barely had any knowledge of what the Speech & Language field was all about. I was first introduced to it by a close friend whose stepmother worked as a Speech pathologist in New York City. She had mentioned how she became interested in the field, and even suggested it to me. I was going to come into the University at Buffalo undecided, but the minute she told me about this field I was captivate. I decided to do some research, and gain knowledge on what the major was all about and the different directions that one can take when working in this field. I am someone who has always loved to eventually work with children, so this field became even more interesting when I knew that working with children was a possibility.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

When I started this program I was deciding between being a pediatrician or a pediatric nurse, but now that I have been through the program and had a chance to explore many different careers I have shifted between many different pathways in the medical field. As I transitioned from introduction to health to medical terminology, I found one career that I never knew existed, a neonatal nurse. As soon as i realized that you can work, let alone get payed to work with babies, there would be no questioning what I wanted…

Growing up in a small, rural town you come to know people on a very personal level. You share in their joy, their sorrow, and their struggles. Watching people who played significant roles in my life suffer because they did not get the help the needed impacted my life greatly. Observing the roles of several different healthcare professionals, I quickly came to the realization that patients in rural areas do not always receive the support they need. It wasn’t until I observed an Occupational Therapist working with my grandmother after she had a stroke that my perspective changed. I reflected while watching the Occupational Therapist work with my grandmother about the importance of what I was observing, not only for my grandmother, but for the…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…

I found dreams I never knew I would want to accomplish so desperately, which is another reason I started taking college classes my senior year through a running start program. I have started a new passion towards history and society change over time which has made me strongly perplexed about a career choice.
