Nutrition Counselor Career Essay
I have chosen to pursue a career as a personal nutrition counselor. I plan on working with individuals to reinvent the meals that they are currently eating to help them create a healthier lifestyle. In the state of Arizona, I do not need any licensure or certificates to be a nutritionist. Completing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nutrition Science will teach me the fundamentals of human nutrition as well as the biochemical make-up of foods and how they relate to prevention and control of diseases, weight management and overall good health. I will learn how to create menus and communicate with the clients. A bachelor’s degree will also give credibility to my work. Knowing their health history is important in determining proper diets and avoiding possible food interactions and/ or allergies. Many people have diseases, ailments or predispositions to such things such as heart disease, cancer, obesity, autoimmune disorders. Therefore, it is imperative to have good communication skills. Social skills are imperative in talking to clients about their health as it can be a sensitive subject. Knowing how to ask a question is just as important as it is to ask it. (U.S.Department of Labor, n.d.) 22 years ago, I was diagnosed with SLE lupus and later with rheumatoid arthritis. At that time, I was told that I would most likely not live more than 15 years. That day I vowed to prove him wrong. Not only was I proactive in my own care regarding medications and treatment plans but I began looking at nutrition as a complementary addition to my care.
