Mentorship Program
Using my leadership skills, I feel I have made a tremendous, positive impact at both my high school community and my university community at Grand Valley State University.

While a student at Detroit Catholic Central High School (CC), I made an impact through establishing a leadership club called “Shamrock Lead.” The club is based on the values of leadership, service and mentorship. These three values were put into action by holding monthly leadership forums between students and faculty, participating in monthly service projects, and creating two mentorship programs. The mentorship programs I created were The Fr. Ned Donoher Mentorship Program, bringing together incoming freshmen and upperclassmen, and Shamrock Connect, facilitating connections between current students and school alumni. A true definition of leadership is being able to take

This past February, I was granted an appointment to Grand Valley State University’s Student Senate as a part of the Educational Affairs Committee. GVSU’s senate is composed of 44 hard-working and passionate students, all working to better GVSU by taking the opinions of students and working on projects to improve the well-being of all at Grand Valley. A project I am currently working on is a mentorship program for undecided students or for those who need more clarity in choosing a major. Through my conversations with many students and my own experience, I’ve learned that choosing a major requires much guidance and research. The program I am developing is meant to match students with upperclassmen and alumni who are knowledgeable in a major of interest. They can provide the student with advice regarding classes, internships, and career paths. I hope to continue working on this project to have an impact on future GVSU students who need guidance on the very important decision of a

During the course of my high school career, I have developed a strong passion for the organization named the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that focuses on building students into better leaders for their families, careers, and communities. Furthermore, FCCLA teaches students practical skills that will be useful throughout their lifetimes. This organization has become an important part of my life because it has shaped me into the leader I am today. I began in the organization as a member and participant in competitive events, I have now worked my way up to being my chapter’s President and the Missouri State First Vice President. My leadership experience in FCCLA, especially my experience as a member of the Missouri State…

I asked myself, “what can I do to make an impact on my community?”. That is when I founded my high school’s Red Cross Club. We aimed to push the vision-mission, “to alleviate human suffering through volunteering and donations” to the student body to make a change in our community. I initially started with only three other members, however, we bolstered our ranks by over 20+ members in two weeks. Balancing 7 AP and PreAP classes, such as Biology and US History, proved to be a challenge for management of the club. Keeping up with extracurriculars was not always easy however, I always made time to supervise my club. Being a leader at times was very frustrating, but overall it was a very positive experience. While I did slave for the club, it never felt like work to me because I felt very passionate helping others. The Red Cross Club became my medium for making a positive impression on my environment. Through the cooperation of my school’s class officers and my own members, we did donations like can drives around Thanksgiving to help soften the burden of low income families in inner Houston. In addition, with collaboration with Student Council, we fundraised and donated to sponsor underprivileged children during Christmas. Being a part of this club has made a positive impact on my life to be great. My experiences at the club made me develop a strong work ethic, and useful leadership experience to be used in…

What I realized about being a good leader from my peers through our discussions was that before being a good leader, you have to be a good person and have good character. Character and leadership are traits that are connected because if you don’t have good character, how can you expect people to follow your example? I also just wanted to add that unfortunately, S.A.L.T did not meet this year, and that is why I’ve only been active in this club for my sophomore…

The Independent study mentorship program or better known as ISM is truly what it sounds, as it is an independent study in which the student is not only treated as a learner of the teacher, the ISM instructor, but yet accepted as a fellow thinker because independent research and an innovative approach is highly encouraged. The reason as to why I would like to be a part of this brilliant opportunity is because I get to study and research the topics and information that would fit into the profession that I seek to get more opportunities other than the psychology classes that I already had and will take next year, to have a chance to see how the environment in the real world is while…

But, I’m only going to go into detail on one. I was an emerging leader, and it was a class that you apply to take when you’re going into your sophomore year, and was aimed at bringing together a diverse array of leaders from all types of organizations on campus. The class was directed by my school’s head of the Center for Leadership & Service department and she certainly is great at her job. Every class was different and unique. Some were aimed at a different way to look at the world, those around you, the way others think, the way others are treated in society, and a wide array of popular leadership theories and insights into how to inspire others and yourself. I still remember what my class came up as our definition of what leadership is to us and it still applies to me today. It was, “Leadership is a continuous developmental process towards the growth of oneself and those around them.” I like the idea of trying to have the mentality of always choosing the positive option in life. This, and the other leadership experience’s I have had are some of the few experiences that I have walked away truly feeling like I grew as a person, taking away with me both new knowledge and leadership skills that will dramatically help me handle the daily struggles that the professional world offers. The leadership programs I attended set a catalyst to my interest in people…
