Marisol Character Analysis
On April 8th, 2016, I observed a production that first premiered in 1992 about a Puerto Rican woman named Marisol, who went through the emotional heartbreak of her angel leaving to fight against God and trying to endure in an apocalyptic world. This magnificent, humorous and passionate drama is simply named Marisol. I walked down the polished floor of the Don Taft University Center of Nova Southeastern University towards the Black Box Theatre. I tendered my ticket for Marisol to a beaming and courteous attendant that was dressed in a sophisticated black outfit that consisted of black slacks paired with a black shirt. Some characters were homeless people that had soiled, ragged and torn up clothes, almost as if they went through hell and then back again. Marisol’s outfit was ordinary, nothing truly special, but that is her character. Marisol is a Puerto Rican woman that works in an office, thus, normal clothing is appropriate. Lenny’s outfit was great because it fits his personality perfectly. In my point of view Lenny (played by Michael Friedman) is childish and immature, hence, for him to show up in a baby blue robe with normal clothing underneath was faultless. I especially loved the outfit that was designed for the woman with fur (played by Alexandra Zadak), the costume designer Amanda Holtzman, did an exceptionally outstanding job with that character’s outfit. When the woman appeared on stage, she was glamorous. She wore pointed-toe heels, a silky log sleeve top that was paired with some silky bottoms that gleamed in the light, and she has this humongous fur coat that covered most of her outfits. This woman walked with class and superiority. Her costume gave her this extra aristocratic vibe that made my eyes bulge out of their sockets. Not only was the woman with furs costume remarkable, but the angel’s regalia was incredible as well. The character's placement throughout the performance was perfect. For instance, when Marisol appeared back on stage there were homeless people evenly spread out. Due to the specific settlement of the homeless, Marisol had nowhere to run; everywhere she turned there was an aggressive person near her. That was actually a bit scary because it triggered this sense of being trapped within me, which is not a nice feeling. Also, the exits and entrances of characters were smooth and connected. The props were placed in the appropriate spots and none of the items appeared as if it didn't have a function in the play. Margaret did an outstanding job in directing how the characters were placed; the placement of each person elicited some type of response. For instance, there was a part where an angel was perched on top of a wall which gave me chills and a smile formed on my face. The angel was positioned in a spot where she was surrounded by a majestic and powerful aura; it truly enhanced the overall
