Blithe Spirit Analysis
The production of Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward was performed by The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film and directed by Virginia Smith. I attended the performance on March 2nd, 2016 at 7:30 pm. Overall, I thought this play was very interesting and kept me intrigued the whole time. I would say that I don’t really have a type of production that I would attend, but now seeing this production I would most likely go see it again to see how other organizations would vary it. Every performer that was in this production I thought had done a very good job of acting. However, I am going to focus on Ruth Condomine and Madame Arcati. Ruth was Charles Condomine’s second wife and loved to have a good time by stirring up past circumstances. I thought …show more content…
Madame Aracati was the medium that the Condomine’s had called to their house so that they could have a little fun with making fun of Madame Arcati’s craziness. This performer had some of the best gestures I have ever seen in a performance. Whenever she would do her séances, where she would move around and do many exaggerated movements made her very believable that she was a medium that felt very in touch with the spirits. Her overall energy made the production very enjoyable. She was very good at keeping her accent the whole time, but there were times I felt that she was talking fast so it became a little hard to understand during those times. All of the craziness and energy she supplied, especially riding a bike for a short seven miles, made her very believable that she was a medium that was very into her work and excited about this extraordinary event that was taking …show more content…
In fact, I wanted every single pair of Ruth’s shoes. I especially loved her gray cutout heels that she wore with her ghost costume. All of the outfits fit very well into the time period and all were very classy looking which definitely gave the impression of them all being wealthy. However, Madame Arcati did not fit in with all the other styles, but right when I saw her, I knew she was going to have some quirks to her because of the way that she was dressed. The costumes all conveyed as well that this took place in the summer because they were all very lively colors and breathable clothing. Each costume portrayed each character’s personality very well by matching their personality, whether they were quirky or very wise and professional. The ghosts were also conveyed very well because they looked like actual spirits and were wearing more flowing clothing to portray that they were just a fog floating

Katelyn Rabak performed, “History Lesson,” which was about a woman who was giving her last tour at Mount Rushmore, after her boyfriend had told her she was fired. Katelyn’s voice carried very nicely this time. Also, her beats were more defined, and differentiated. However, Katelyn has a tendency to fall into a certain inflection pattern from time to time. In regards to what we learned this unit, she used the 90-to-10 rule very well, and she positioned her imaginary partners downstage (and in a way that made sense). I wished she worked on her “need” more. She did very well at spewing out odd facts that would surprise people, but I didn’t feel like she was trying to get a reaction from them that would backfire on the touring company. To make the monologue more humorous, she could’ve added more physical gestures, and those would’ve helped her vary the moments. Overall, I believe that Katelyn had a solid performance, she just needs to push herself more so that she’s not just scratching the surface.…

To be completely honest, I would have to say that majority of the acting was very mediocre. I know it wasn’t supposed to be like something off of Broadway but I expected a lot more, and I felt like only a couple of actors came through with that. The acting was not terrible, but it wasn’t spectacular either. I felt like some characters were not putting their all into their characters. I also felt like some people should not have been casted into the roles they had received. Many times a background character would outshine a main character during the performance. Pertaining to the acting, I think that the fact that it was a musical added more stress to the actors which consequently could have placed a strain on their acting abilities. This is because they were most likely more concerned with their vocals. Something I did like in their acting was the fact that they used little children, I found that very adorable.…

I never have seen a play with an all women cast, and these actresses worked well together and made the play enjoyable to watch. There was Trudy, which was my favorite actress, as the typical redneck hair stylist. She was the character that I related to the most. She was always up to date with the latest gossip and knew everything going on in her small town. Whitney Allen did a great job playing Trudy, and had everything down from the look to the voice. Another character that I enjoyed was Clairee; she was the typical rich and nosey woman. It was evident that she did not go into the beauty shop to get her hair done; however, she went to be around friends and to catch up on the latest gossip. I absolutely loved Shelby! She was so cute and I could relate so much to her. I think that Meghan Collins played the perfect Shelby. She helped me to understand how Shelby was at heart and helped me to understand the character. The only character I was not too fond of was M'Lynn. She reminded me of my mom, always trying to pick fights with her daughter. When Shelby expressed how she was going to have a baby and how happy she was, she yelled at her. Instead, I think she should have been a supportive mom and backed her daughter up in any decision that she had. The way the actresses acted helped to relate to my next point, which was the audience…

You’ve got what it takes – Salem Spirit. This is the claim that the RJ Reynolds Cigarette Company makes, and it certainly sounds enticing. After all, a group of young professionals certainly seems to experience the good life after having consumed this product. As the advertising industry is only loosely regulated by the Federal Trade Commission, it is not surprising that this part of the message is very bloated, while the truthful information about this product is almost ignored, therefore painting a skewed picture of Salem cigarettes. The effectiveness of this deceptive advertisement reaching out to the younger demographic relies largely on the marriage of brilliant color composition throughout…

One very notable performance for me was how quickly the more tame Reverend was able to switch characters and become his hot-tempered son Luke, who wasn’t afraid to do whatever it took to achieve justice. The difference between these two characters was like hot and cold and the actor who played both was able to change between characters fairly quickly so that it was almost difficult to tell that it was the same person playing a different character. I also found the scenes after Portia had been shot to be very moving and I really felt like the actors gave it their all. They were able to embrace the agony of not knowing if your child is going to make it and the difficulty of dealing with people trying to pity you.…

I thought the actors were very well rehearsed and sung very well. A few times someone said a line a little to fast but otherwise everything was very believable. They all had microphones on so they were nice and loud but whoever was controlling the microphones could have used a little more practice because their voices would cut in and out and the audio person would turn the wrong person’s microphone on. They all had great choreography and gestures.…

    3. Which actors did a convincing job? Describe their technique. Meagan Oliver, as Francine and Lena, was very convincing in her roles as maid and homeowner. The contrast between the maid in Act I, and Lena in Act II stood out. She walked and sat differently as Lena. She was high class, respectful and then aggressive when angry. She got into verbal arguments with Steve, Lena and her husband Kevin. She even told an offensive joke in Act II. As a black maid in 1959, she mainly only spoke when spoken to; and said very little to Russ and…

I found the timing of this production was just right; however I thought the end of the play was somewhat dragged on, and could have ended earlier than it did. The use of shadow puppets was extraordinary, and…

The Divertissement pas de quatre was on the whole good. Joseph Gorden seemed a bit rushed and nervous, but he has white tight potential. The women's variations are difficult and in a way thankless. There is one challenge after another with no pay off. Brittany Pollack and Megan LeCrone handled themselves admirably. Erica Perrera less so IMO.…

I enjoyed following Aran and Joan in the movie because they both had many qualities as people that I found interesting. I like Aran because he was a very nice and cute kid who moved very gracefully for his age. He danced very maturely and even while watching the film, I had to question his age because he is fit and seems to know what he is doing. I thought he was funny because in the beginning he showed the camera many different tools that he uses to help stretch and practice and when he showed the tool that stretches his toes he told the camera “This one hurts a lot”. His relationship with Gaya was really sweet, all the way to the end where he had to help explain that she won third place at the ballet convention they attended. I also liked…

I haven’t done it before because I usually try to avoid events that I deem as uncomfortable, as I usually tend to stay inside my comfort zone. However, once I saw this assignment I began I think of the opportunities that had arose recently and if any of those opportunities were still available for me to pursue. Having recently been asked by my Grandma to attend a show at the local dinner theatre, I accepted her invitation and decided to delve outside of my comfort zone. The show was called Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. A synopsis of the story is that the main character, Charles wants new topics for his new novel so he…
