Civil Disobedience In Antigone
The play Antigone is a tragedy play that most of the characters were killed at the end. The central theme of this play is “civil disobedience” and is about the controversies between gender, power, age, religion, beliefs, and laws. The script begins with Antigone asking Ismene to bury their brother because Creon, their uncle passed down a decree saying no one is allowed to bury Polynices because he betrayed his country can killed his own brother. Antigone chose to disobey the law and was sentenced to death. Every one advised Creon to rethink his decision, but he didn’t listen until the end when everything was too late. There was a total of 11 actor used in this production (9 male and 2 female). This production is not a traditional play that have all the performer stand on stage and speak. It included the uses of music. Slow movement/dance, and the inclusion of English and Ancient Greek. The play started with Creon sitting on a podium facing the Leader of Chorus that was standing on another podium on the …show more content…
There was also the use of gold, red, and white fabric; different colors represents different characters. Creon had the golden fabric to show his power of being a king. The Leader of Chorus had a grey net like covering him which shows that he is “lost” or blocked by the power of the net/Creon. The Leader broke free from the fabric when Creon understood that he was wrong. Antigone had the red fabric shows her braveness and strength of disobeying the law. It also foreshadows her death at the end. Ismene had the white fabric that represent the recessive side of her comparing to Antigone. My experience for this production wasn’t what I expected. There were less talking and more action involved to express the character’s feeling.     Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech focuses on the importance of freedom and brotherhood in a nation and is intended to rally Americans to demonstrate their anger at the injustices of segregation and racism through “creative protest.” While King’s passion and anger at the status quo is obvious in the text, he specifically states that they “must not allow [their] [protest] to degenerate into physical violence.” He is pushing for defiance against the government. Antigone exhibits the same kind of defiance when she goes against Creon’s law and completes her brother’s burial rites. Antigone, like Martin Luther King Jr., was faced with conflicting obligations; the obligation of a citizen to follow the law, and personal obligation to fight what one feels is wrong.     The tragic play Antigone, written by Sophocles, is a story of mixed emotions and drastic reactions. At the beginning of the play, the current ruler of Thebes, Creon, orders that no one is to touch the deceased Polynecies. However, Antigone has a very different plan for his body. Antigone tries to convince her sister, Ismene, to help her bury her brother, but she is too afraid to break the law. After sprinkling dirt on the body, Creon sentences Antigone to death, even though she is engaged to be married to Creon’s son, Haimon. Antigone, Haimon, and Creon’s wife, Eurydice, all commit suicide in the end. Antigone exemplifies Aristotle’s classical definition of a tragedy by consisting of quantitative and organic parts, making the story seem probable, and having a tragic hero. In Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy, he states that there must be two parts: quantitative and organic. When reading Antigone, the quantitative parts, prologos, episodes, choric, odes, and exodos, are clearly labeled before each section. The story also has organic parts, recognition and pathos. The recognition part of the play is when Creon decides to release Antigone because it is the wrong thing to do. He says, “Come with me to the tomb. I buried her, I/ will set her free,” (act 5, lines 106-107). The pathos, or scene of suffering, occurs to Creon when the realization that everyone is dead hits him. He is engulfed in sorrow and self-sufferance because his wife and son have perished. He even goes far enough to say, It is right that is should be. I alone am guilty. I know it, and I say it. Lead me in, Quickly, friends. I have neither life nor substance. Lead me in (act 4, lines 121-124) When reading carefully, the parts of Antigone are obvious to the reader, coinciding with Aristole’s definition.     Enacting a play can represent powerful ideas. First, is important to highlight the fact that Nelson Mandela´s time in prison where due to his constant attempts to bring justice to South Africa. Mandela, just as Antigone, was victim of an injustice government committed to demonstrate their power. Naturally, just as Nelson, Antigone demonstrated to be brave. In context, she was one of the four children of Oedypus, which committed patricide and incest, and when everything was discovered, she exiled him because of the dishonor. That action demonstrated how much she respected the laws and honor in her life. After this event happened, Creon, his uncle, took the power as king and planned a cue d’état in which both Antigone´s brothers died in battle. According to what was just mentioned, it becomes easier to realize the equalities in which Antigone such as Mandela lived. Creon, in his visceral way, thought that everything he decided was correct; therefore, he chose to ignore the visions of the Oracle. Meanwhile, Antigone decided that god´s laws where more powerful than any man´s law and she planned to bury her brother. Still Ismene, her sister, abandoned her by the fear of the punishment that this action leads to. The reaction of Ismene, can be interpreted because of the historical context in which women were regarded as inferior. Even though Antigone wasn´t supported she decided to do the correct thing by giving a symbolic bury to his brother; just as Mandela did when he traveled around Africa to collect funding for his movement.
