Alienation Effect in Top Girls by Caryl Churchill

Caryl Churchil’s play Top Girls presents a socially challenging commentary. She uses a variety of theatrical techniques to convey her message. Influences of Brechtian Epic Theatre can be seen explicitly in her employment of the technique called the alienation effect. Brecht’s alienation effects, in contrast to suspension of disbelief associated with realistic plays, tries to destroy the possibility of escapism and aims to put audience in a situation when they can reflect critically in a factual context. It does not make an attempt to portray life as it is, rather strives to make the familiar strange in order to emotionally detach the viewer from the characters and give them a basis for social or political reflection. Caryl Churchill’s use of this technique can be particularly seen in the first scene of the play. Set of the first scene is minimalist, rather suggesting than showing the location, however characters costumes are a very important feature. They help to indicate character’s status and profession. Characters are wearing full costumes, not only just props, which clearly suggest the importance of this feature in portraying the character and can give the reader an idea who is he dealing with. The costumes’ role is even of a greater importance as it is a tool of contrasting the characters. Contrast is very significant in the scene, especially when it is taken into account that most characters are historical. Furthermore, some of them are actually fictional characters and the ones who actually existed come from various, distant periods in the history and completely different places in the world. This can be perceived by the viewer from the very beginning and does not give the possibility to even temporary accept the events or characters, who are often long dead or never lived, as believable. Therefore, from the opening scene the author or reader is invited to view the play

    When I first saw the play I payed no attention to the costumes but enjoy the overall play, which mean that costume designers did a good job. According to professor Landis, she says that costumes should not be the main focus but improve the overall environment of the play. Once I look back to picture of the play, I start noticing costumes. I find it beautiful how all the characters wore emerald, lively clothing to add to the wonder of Emerald City. I also notice that Elphaba has the famous wiked witch hat but the costume designer made modification that make it appear like the orignial hat, but it looks more suiting to a beautiful younge women. This production used a lot of change of set design as well as the use of expensive effects. For instant, during the scene were there is flying monkeys, the audience not only see a million monkeys appearing as if they are going to take flight but the huge dragon on top of the stage comes alive.     Brecht’s techniques are a by-product of his environment. His theatre is best described as a dramatic vessel of rational didacticism, influenced by his Marxist beliefs. One Brechtian technique used is gestus. Gestus is used in the play to define the emotion within the character and the context they are in, such as Dulcie Doily and her fanatic religious views and her nonexistent talking parrot.     The Sharks a Puerto Rican gang wore more traditional style spanish clothing that always incorporated the colors red and black. After a good bit of whining Maria finally puts on a beautiful white dress, and continues to spin in front of the mirror admiring herself. In one of the most moving scenes of the play when everyone on stage is wearing white to symbolize purity, and innocence after two influential characters have been stabbed to death. The people who have been stabbed come out in the same white clothing, but it is covered in blood to show. This choice of clothing shows the death of innocence of the young boys who have been corrupted after the murders they committed.…

    The costume design of the play is pretty interesting. Costumes indicated the timeline and places that the story was taking place (Wilson and Goldfarb 173). Actors who dressed normally lived in the real world, and those who wore game costumes lived in the virtual world. The costume design also indicates the characterization. For instance, Agnes in normal clothes showed that she was a student and lived a normal life. Tilly who is Agnes 's sister, wore a black and tight costume with a sword.     Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and Brien Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa are both plays set in times of great change. The former deals with the implications of the electoral success of Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female Prime Minister, while the latter grapples with the consequences of industrialization in Donegal, Ireland. The chief concern of both plays is how political changes affect the choices available to ordinary women. The two plays appear to be making political statements conveying personal standpoints of the playwrights. In the case of Churchill, it can be said that she is critiquing the Conservative Thatcher government and the negative impact it had on women. Friel is drawing attention to the introduction of factories in Ireland and the impact this had on working class families. Both plays evoke sympathy for the struggles of working class women. Margaret Thatcher was not a feminist and was not interested in advancing the position of women in society. She believed in individualism and that women could make it to the top if they worked hard enough; behaving like a man, but dressing like a woman. The character Marlene in Top Girls clearly fits into this category of a new breed of woman as she has achieved senior management status at her company without acting like a man, or at least not on the surface: “I don’t wear trousers in the office. I could but I don’t”. Changes occurring at the time were not benefiting women, rather, they were hindering their opportunities, because women were succeeding at the expense of other women. Again, Marlene is representative of this as she virtually abandoned her sister, mother, and daughter in the pursuit of a successful career.     When action is onstage, it allows the audience to experience the drama with the characters and it provokes strong emotions as the audience witnesses the climax of the play and the reactions of and effects on the characters. However, if action is offstage, the audience do not see for themselves the events of the play and how the characters adjust themselves to the events, but, this does not mean that these actions are ineffective or unimportant.
