Mandatory Community Service For College Students
The average college student is thought of as a caucasian middle to upper-class 20-year-old. On the contrary, we are seeing a rapidly rising number of lower income and minorities attending four-year public educational universities.Many people believe that college students should be giving back to the communities that raised them, however how you would implement a policy that is meant to help people could either make it a success or a resounding failure and discriminatory policy. The mandatory community service for college is discriminatory towards minority and lower-income students, as well as their respected communities. The loose wording of key definitions along with systematic societal challenges makes for this policy as it stands a cog in the cycle of oppression and poverty. The proponents of mandatory community service for college students often claim that it is cut and dry on how the service would be carried out, however, the definition of community service does not corroborate their contention. Community Service is defined by the Oxford dictionary as “voluntary work intended to help people in a specific area”. In the definition it reads “in a specific area”, however, the

We do not want to discourage the overall positive trajectory our diverse groups of students are taking with one policy when there are more pressing issues arising. A better focus of cost management of college could impact communities more positively than community service because we could bring a new collective level of education to those less fortunate.
