College for All: An American Dream
College for America
In a land that has been so horribly affected by the recessions and high unemployment rates, what if I could give you the perfect fix for your troubles. The solution will not only create more jobs, but it would also allow those that already have a job a way to move up the corporate ladder providing a better future for the families and for their society. Now this solution is not free, there will be upfront cost associated with the cure, but the longer term out come far outweighs the upfront front cost. Countries like Denmark and Germany have in recent years decided that not only would tuition be free but this benefit would also be afforded to international students. Germany recently outlawed the charging of tuition, in effort to make a commitment to the country standards of “universal education”. In a recent article on Think Progress . org, Dorothee Stapelfeldt., a senator for science in Hamburg, is quoted saying,“Tuition fees are unjust, they discourage young people who do not have a traditional academic family background from taking up study. It is a core task of politics to ensure that young women and men can study with a high quality standard free of charge in Germany.”
Many situations in the United States allow certain groups to take advantage of a free education. Starbucks just announced Starbucks College Achievement Plan . This plan allows Starbucks employees to receive full tuition reimbursement for each year of coursework they complete toward a bachelor’s degree. Freshmen and sophomores will receive a partial scholarship and need-based financial aid toward the foundational work of completing their degree. Having a free tuition for the high school graduate will be no different than the GI bill for the military. The will be cost associated with the change, can be offset with higher income levels from careers for those with higher education. State Colleges will not differ very much in funding, especially when partnered with Private Institution on step programs. Texas has already invested in step programs with Alamo Colleges.
Whatever path America chooses to travel, if the decision to invest in our country’s education is made, the United States is definitely headed on the right path. Now is the time to act! Lets make education a priority to ALL American students not just the precious few, before its too late. In closing, a quote from our 35th president sum it up, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.”
