How Field Experience Changed Me
How Has Field Experience Changed/Affected me?
If someone were to ask me about five years ago if I would consider teaching as a career, I would have looked at them like they were crazy. I never thought I would even begin to have an interest in teaching.
It was not until my freshman year in high school that I knew I wanted to be a teacher; better yet, a Band Director. I had always had a passion for music but never actually thought about pursuing it as a career. It was not until my mom and I sat down and talked about my college career path. I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to do when I “grew up”. It was then that my mom suggested that I be a High School Band Director because of my passion for not only music but also marching band. I then gave it some thought and knew for sure that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
Recently however, I have been questioning my major. I have caught myself wondering, “Is this really what I want to do for the rest of my life?” and “Do I really want to be a Band Director?” I started second guessing my choices and really starting to think that maybe I do need to change my major.
Since joining the Teacher Cadet program and going through Field Experience, I have completely made up my mind. After spending three weeks in a band room surrounded by kids who look to me for musical help and advice, I absolutely, without question, know that I want to be a band director. I could not possibly imagine myself doing anything else for as long as I live.

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a career where I could serve others, and I always believed that being a nurse would allow me to achieve this goal. To begin with, I worked as a student intern, as a tutor for the Advancement Via Individual Determination program for four years.…

I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

Ever since I was younger, I’ve had a large imagination, filling up my days dreaming up endless scenarios of the future. Thinking of possible careers was never a problem, but choosing out of the many life paths I wanted was. I alternated between wedding planner, creating a notebook filled with torn out pages of poofy dresses and possible wedding locations; author, stuffing short stories and poems into a floral folder; and psychiatrist, researching the process to become a doctor. The thought that these may not be options for me never crossed my mind. I only knew I would do whatever I could to live out the future I saw in my mind.…

I started putting in a lot of thought about my future career ever since I got into high school. The choices were computer engineering, a music producer, and a fashion designer. However, as time progressed, I realized that they were rather hobbies which I would eventually lose interest in rather than something that I truly wanted to pursue. During my junior year, I was assigned as a film editor for a project. At first, it took me an extensive amount of time to figure out all the editing software because I was not familiar with the key commands and effects, but as I played around with it, I quickly overcame most of the obstacles and achieved what others desired in each project.…

When I was young it was oblivious to everyone that I was going far in life doing music, whether that be playing an instrument, dance, musical theatre or something along those lines. I just grew up that way, being introduced to all different styles and types of music from my dad. Now on the flip side of things, my mom. I’ve always asked her what she wanted to be when she was younger, she would say a secretary. Later she admitted she was just saying that to shut me up. She is an example of someone who just didn’t find something they loved to do. I think she has a life calling, she just never found it. My family and I all pretty much know what we love to do. Me and my brother are most definitely working towards those goals everyday. A good thing to have though, is a plan. Having a plan for your life achievement or goal is good so then you will be prepared and ready when it comes to college or…
