Air Force Personal Narrative
When I was a five years old, my mom asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” For years the answer was different every time she asked. After my eleventh birthday, my reply to the question began to develop into the same response. I wanted to join the United States Air Force. Entering into my teenage years, that continued to be my dream. Along came my senior year and that was still my plan. Little did I know, my future was being shaped by forces bigger than myself, sending me into a different direction. A few days after my eleventh birthday, my family and I went on vacation to visit my Uncle Joe in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The day before we left, my mom grounded me for being mean to my cousin. That meant I couldn’t go to the mall …show more content…
There were two main tests I had to exempt to join the Air Force. The first test was the ASVAB. A test designed for knowledge. Second was the physical, which was 10 physical exams. After all the tests were taken and finished, I was already in the second semester of my senior year. I was so convinced that I was going to the Air Force that my whole world shook when I received a call on my nineteenth birthday. My recruiter explained to me how well my test results came out, but then he also explained how I failed one of the tests from the physical. The astigmatism in my eyes was too strong for the Air Force to accept. And just like that, my dream of joining the Air Force was over.
I knew I had to do something, so my next step was getting into college. Which was difficult for the fact that I hadn’t visited or looked at any colleges due to my dream of enlisting into the Air Force. There was only one college left that I could possibly get into. That was South Plains College (SPC). Applications and essays were due the following morning that I received the call from my recruiter. With constant coffee and a great mother, I was able to complete the application, resume, essay, and three recommendation

Somewhere in the Middle East there is a mom fighting in a foreign war. The gunpowder smoke coagulating in her lungs, hearing the cries for help, and not knowing if she’ll ever see her 2 year old son again. Soldiers everywhere do this every day not knowing if they are going home ever to see their loved ones. They do this because they are selfless and are heroes. That’s why an American I believe in is made possible by the sacrifices of our military.…

As a teenager I had many goals for myself in mind for the future. I decided that for my goals to happen I need to pursue a college degree after I graduated high school, but I knew that my parents wouldn’t be able to afford my college tuition. Before joining the service, I had plenty of part-time jobs as waitressing in different restaurants which at the time I thought it was a stressful job. If I had only known that going through army basic training was going to involved double the stress and aches I was going through as a waitress, I would have preferred to deal with rude customers, horrible working condition and long, stressful hours my way through college.…

Despite non-selection, my pursuit of this prestigious and challenging position will not be deterred. My naval career, I have continually sought positions of greater responsibility and produced exceptional results in each of those positions. While I take great pride in being a Chief Petty Officer, I feel the experience I have acquired as a Chief will benefit any wardroom I am a member of. It is important to note that I did not submit an LDO-CWO package for FY-14 due to the time constraints I experienced while standing up Naval Beach Unit SEVEN with an under staffed office and operational commitment.…

It would be an honor and a privilege to continue my service as a Surface Warfare Officer. I had the pleasure of being assigned to the USS Chung-Hoon during my senior Midshipman cruise. While on the Chung-Hoon, I was tasked with assuming the role of conning officer. I was held to the same expectation as my running mate; I was to have in-depth knowledge of the ship’s navigational capabilities, report for duty fully prepared to assume responsibilities, and, at all times, be diligent when working in unison with the different departments of the ship in order to assure safe navigation. Working with the officers and crew on the Chung-Hoon was the greatest lesson in leadership I experienced, and serves as the point in my life where I knew I was destined to be a warfighter. I know that as a Surface Warfare Officer,…

“You are order to active duty as a member of your reserve component unit for the period indicated unless sooner released or unless extended. Proceed from your current location in sufficient time to report by the date specified. You enter active duty upon reporting to unit home station”. These were the words telling me that I was going to Iraq, to fight and destroy the enemies of the United States of America and face one of my biggest challenges yet. Soon after I received my orders in the mail I had a dilemma, what’s going to happen when I tell my mother and the rest of my family? Have I been taking my family and friends for granted, now that I have this situation in front of me I realize that maybe I should have tried…

As I moved on into my junior year I was voted into being Treasurer for our school’s FBLA-PBL. I also got an invitation into National Honor Society. I filled out of application and waited for the letter of acceptance or denial. At the time I felt great about my academic standing, 3.6 GPA, mostly all honors and dual enrollment courses. Needless to say, it came as a shock to me when they rejected me. Their reason for my rejection as a lack of GPA, at the time the requirement was a 3.5 GPA. I did not take this lightly, I thought to myself, “If NHS won’t accept me, what college would?’ I saw as all my friend began to get into NHS and yet I was struck with a black and white paper that simply said I was not good enough. I went on to ask teachers about what I should do. Shortly after I wrote a six paragraph essay taking about how I met the requirement for each one of the NHS pillars. I would have been so happy if I turned in that letter and they accepted me on the spot. However, the day after I turned it in I was called down and informed that the decision had not been…

It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. I did not know that it required a knowledge of electronics, where the school was located, and for how long. All I knew was I like how it looked. Back at the recruiter office he review my ASVAB scores and high school grades and informed that I could reenlist into any chosen field of my choice. He gave the military occupation handbook to review. I thumbed through the pages for hours looking dreaming, looking, and dreaming until finally I came across the Improved Continuous Wave radar repairman (24 kilo). The school was located in Huntsville, Alabama which was not too far from Ft. Bragg and my home town of Norfolk, Virginia. The schooling was 29 weeks long and I could bring my family because of the length of the schooling. My wife Vickie went where ever I went no matter where. My son was three now and Vickie was expecting again, so I had to think about housing immediately. I informed the recruiter I had made up my mind in my career choice. He completed all the necessary paper work and I was on my way and happy to be! I called Vickie and told her that I had just reenlisted for 6 more years and we were going to Huntsville, Alabama at Redstone Arsenal the home of the Marshall Space and Rocket…
