Personal Narrative: Joining The Military
It was about seven in the evening and I got a call from my friend, letting me know she and her grandmother had made it home. Her grandmother is in her 60’s, so there wasn’t much texting going between us. I’d been trying to catch up with her all day to interview her, but I guess she had a very busy weekend. I finally arrived to the house just ready to get the interview over with. As I entered the house, I was greeted by a large smile and green eyes. Ms. Consuelo Duplessis had finally made time for me to interview her about her military and civilian life style. After she greeted me, she put her head back in the phone and asked for a fewer minutes, to wrap up so business on the phone. I patiently sat in the chair, waiting for about 5 minutes for her to let me know she was ready, then we began. Before we began, I explained to her that I needed her to throughly answer my questions and then elaborate more, as much as possible. She giggled a little and adjusted herself on the couch as we began. I clearly explained to her that the interview was about her time in the service; I needed information of before, during, and after. She told me it sounded simple enough, and we began. Now, let’s assume everyone in America has no idea what the military is really like; …show more content…
Ms. Connie was married at 18, so there wasn’t much of a reason for her to work or go to school because her husband felt like that was his job, to provide. She mentioned when they first got married, she enjoyed “being taken care of as much as he enjoyed taking care of me!” But, it all got old very quick to her because she was never the one to depend on others. She was taking care of herself before and it wasn't appealing anymore; having to depend on someone for everything just wasn’t in her nature. That’s where the military came into the plan, when she saw an ad in the newspaper for tuition exemption if she

For our first interview, Jenn Tracy of General Mills and I spoke on the phone for a little over half an hour. Mrs. Tracy and I had a very interesting conversation about life, work, and balance. To start off the interview, I asked her questions about her background in an effort to get to know her better and possibly better understand her answers to my questions later on. Through my questions I learned that Mrs. Tracy spent four years at MSU-Mankato for her undergrad. She is also married, has two younger kids, and absolutely loves to spend her free time being outside.…

The subject of my interview is Rob Reyes. He has been our next door neighbor since we moved here to Indio six months ago. He is a second generation Filipino-American that was born in America and has lived in California all of his life. Rob is 26 years old and has been married to his wife Sandra, 27, for 2 years. They don’t have any children, but do plan on having some once they save more money and the economy gets better. They are not rushing it because they have 3 dogs that are their “kids” for the time being, plus they like having their friends over on Friday nights for poker and social drinks. Rob is a technician for Time Warner Cable and has been employed with them for 7 years. His wife Sandra works at a doctor’s office in Palm Springs 30 miles away, so both of them are gone most of the day and we only see them in the evening when they are home from work.…

It is another dreary night at Valley Forge. As I crawl into my unbearable smoky hut, doubt, fear, and cold death are roaming the walls of my hut. In the winter of 1777, Washington’s Continental army suffered terrible conditions at Valley Forge. Many soldiers died from sickness and severe cold weather. Others deserted the camp. Most soldiers received the chance of re-enlisting or not re-enlisting. This decision was one of the hardest decisions of their life. I have decided to re-enlist because the reason we fight in this war is for freedom, there is still hope within us, and pride and relief await after the war.…

In my interview I chose my mom’s long time friend from work. I invited Reyna to my house for dinner, the interview lasted two hours and five minutes. Several questions were asked among the ones required for the assignment. I briefly explained to her the purpose of my interview. I explained to her that everything we talk about it's only going to be shared with my professor for educational purposes. I also explained she may skip or refuse to answer any question she is not comfortable with answering. She laughed, but seemed a bit nervous about giving me the answers to the questions, not because she didn’t wanted to, but because she felt uneducated, confused, and having guilt of being wrong.…

When I exited the military, I had a difficult time transitioning into civilian world. My first job out of the military was at a spa as a holistic health practitioner and certified massage therapist. I could not handle the laziness and the entitlement. I use to have very bad reactions to my fellow employees that would see that there were tasks that need to be done in order to have a successful day at the spa. I would constantly be proactive about carrying out the duties. Many of my fellow therapists would ask me why I am doing tasks that we do not get paid to do. I would aggressively express that if we don’t do them, who will? From a military aspect, I viewed these tasks as things that would make my job successful throughout the day. For example,…

Being a military dependent, I am constantly moving to new locations. It was difficult growing up as a military child because I had no place that I could truly call my home. In addition, since most of my friends were part of a military family, they were constantly moving as well.Throughout my life, my father would often deploy months at a time which was difficult for me especially when I was only a kid because I had not fully comprehended why he was leaving so often. Furthermore, it would always sadden me when he was unable to be there during important milestones of my life. Although being a military child came with its challenges, I had the privilege to discover foreign countries more frequently than the average kid. Over the course of my high…

My service in the military these past five years has provided of me a great number of skills. One skill in which I excel in is general business and maximizing work practices. At any given time, I would have at least 8 subordinates who I trained and had to divide out tasks to each of them. Another skill which I acquired while being in the military is being able to lead and creating accountability. This skill I used daily, making sure all 8 of my subordinates were at work in a timely matter, even if I had to go the extra mile by picking them. A job title that I held in the military was Information Assurance Security Officer. With this job title, I was responsible for making sure all 200 users on the network were compliant with all necessary…

We started off with reading the profile essay out loud alternating paragraphs with her starting first. After the first paragraph was completed she gave me feedback and also asked if I had any questions. It was my turn to read the second paragraph and then we did the same thing as first paragraph. After that Jordan said that she wants to read the whole profile eassy to me because that was something that she figured out got me going in the right direction. I thought that was really helpful how she knew what was more helpful for me and she was right about that because when someone else read to me I start to put an image in my head of what they are reading. She said I am giving an clear understanding who is was helping and how. Another thing that was helpful is that how she was really friendly and because of that I’m not scared to go back in the writing center. We also did a five minute question break at the end and there we came up with some of the questions I could ask Mike Mcgarvin.…
