Issues in Health Care Reform (Interview)
Veronica Ruffin-Ellis, MS, RN, Ed.
Walden University

Identification of a Politician As I looked through all of the Rockland County Legislatures, reading their bios, I became a little overwhelmed in my decision making process of whom I would like to interview. Perhaps it would seem obvious that I would want to interview someone from my district, however on the contrary, my district legislative members have been known to have some criminal doings in those activities related to school taxes. Unfortunately many of those who are on the board for my district do not represent the majority of the population, so this indeed was not an option for me. As I came across the bio of Mrs. Aney Paul, County Legislator, District 14, it was clear. Ms. Paul is a wife and mother who resides in Rockland County. She graduated from St. Joseph’s College with a BS in Health Administration. Ms. Paul received a Masters Degree in Public Health from New York Medical College. Thereafter, Mrs. Paul acquired her Masters in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner from Lehman College. She is currently enrolled at Chatham University for her Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Mrs. Paul was indeed the ideal candidate for my interview regarding issues with Health Care Reform. She is a member of the Nanuet Civic Association, President of the New City Library Trustee Board, member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), NAACP member, NYSNA member, she is on the Nyack College Advisory Board, Founding President and member of the Indian Nurses Association of New York and a member of the Jamaican American Civic and Cultural Association, and last but not least, Mrs. Paul is the Chairwoman of the Government Operation Committee. I was quite impressed with her bio, and despite having called three times before scheduling an interview, I was excited to hear her perspective on the health care policy issue of workforce shortages.

Going in to this interview, I was not certain what to expect at all. I had prepared a few questions and anticipated it lasting maybe ten to fifteen minutes at the most. However, my mental image of the interview did not remotely match up to what actually occurred. My interviewee was Dr. Hal B. Woodall, a medical doctor who owns Kenly Medical Associates, his private practice, but also comes in to the Wilson Medical Center to closely follow along with his patients, although he is not employed by, paid, or charged by the hospital for his services there. He has owned this practice and followed this routine for the past 38 years, ever since he completed his residency and internship at what is now known as Virginia Commonwealth University’s medical center. He attended the University of…

For our first interview, Jenn Tracy of General Mills and I spoke on the phone for a little over half an hour. Mrs. Tracy and I had a very interesting conversation about life, work, and balance. To start off the interview, I asked her questions about her background in an effort to get to know her better and possibly better understand her answers to my questions later on. Through my questions I learned that Mrs. Tracy spent four years at MSU-Mankato for her undergrad. She is also married, has two younger kids, and absolutely loves to spend her free time being outside.…

She was involved in analytical testing and method validation in support of a clinical stage full scale manufacturing facility. During that time she developed skills in research and decided to pursue a masters degree in genetics. After obtaining her MS degree in genetics, she worked and volunteered at Howard University’s genetic clinic where she was involved in a research program conducted by the National Institute of Health and DC public schools. This research project focused on the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome in urban areas of the District of Columbia. She assisted practitioners with patient exams, patient interviews and genetic counseling. While working on this project she realized that she was becoming interested in working with undeserved populations. She realized that the lower income population faced a number of health issues that were primarily as a result of lack of access to health care. She wanted to make a difference by finding ways to address the disparities in the patient population in the study. She took advantage of the opportunity to do what she could to make a difference by providing education to patients about the importance of routine doctor visits and providing information about public programs that were available to assist low income residents. She also participated in Howard University sponsored community health fairs…

Explain marriage legally. My grandparents would argue with me on that. Back in the day marriage was between one man and one woman. Nowadays, marriage means something different. Marriage can be between a man and a woman, a man and women, a man and a man, a woman and a woman, and it is all normal in our society. You can be married to someone without church ceremony or any ceremony. There is such thing as common law marriage. We call people husband and wife just because they live together and have child(ren) together but no papers on legal marriage. How do they file taxes? In a gay marriage who is mommy and who is…

Affordable healthcare can enable Americans to live longer, lead more healthy lives and improve their economic potential (Hope Street, 2008). Changes in the healthcare system have been slow in comparison to the areas of industry in the twenty first century. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2012, there is an opportunity to seek a healthier American in advancing preventive healthcare. Our advances in healthcare have been outstanding but the area of providing affordable and accessible healthcare leaves us behind many others nations. This paper will discuss the plan of a visit with State Representative Steven Moscowitz, highlight the importance of expanding the advanced nurse practitioner role, and provide empirical evidence to support this worthy initiative. The goals of ACA are to decrease the amount of uninsured Americans and reduce the cost of healthcare. According to researchers, approximately 75% of chronic illness stems from preventable health conditions (Center for Medicare and Medicaid, 2012). This strengthens the need for a more effective healthcare system where people are able to seek medical guidance and coaching on healthy lifestyles.…

This interview was done on a very special woman named Ms. D.G. In order to get a better understanding on the aging process. My goal was to get an in-depth look at what she has gone through in her life, physiologically and psychologically, and to learn, recognize, and identify with her in some way. People judge our elders everyday, but we fail to remember that not long ago they were our age. this was a great way for myself and others to get an insight on this terse life we have to live.…
