Grandfather Personal Statement
Since I was a child, I have dreamt of joining the United States Military. Generations of my family served as soldiers since the 1940s. My Grandfather, who is my greatest hero, served during WWII as a Staff Sergeant. Throughout my childhood, I've had the honor of learning about my Grandfather and his wartime experiences. His accomplishments, courage, and sacrifices to serve our country enhanced my desires to follow my family's footsteps and further my career and commission as an Officer in the United States Army Nation Guard. Unquestionably, I have the heart and the mind of an Officer. I am a leader, mentor, and coach. Consistently being defined as someone who is instinctive, empathetic and loves to learn. Family, friends and colleagues would …show more content…
Unwavering commitment and my ability to step up in these leadership roles led to several of my proudest accolades. The highest honors in football; receiving awards to include Mr. Football, All-Conference, All-Area, All-Western-North Carolina, and a scholarship to play in college. While at Appalachian State University, I continued to play Lacrosse and Rugby. My efforts and strong desires to achieve any mission, while executing well-developed strategies showed to be greatly admired by my peers. The last two years of college, I earned Captaincy for both Rugby and Lacrosse. Utilizing my experience as a leader, I transcended them into my professional career while maintaining a full-time school status. At a local outdoor adventure company, I was an office manager and guide overseeing a team of over 20 members. My team called on me to lead the more difficult river trips, due to my record as a quick thinking and fast acting rescue team leader. These skills are paramount when dealing with dangerous scenarios on the river. I received this role because I've always performed my best. After college, I continued down the path of becoming an even stronger

Being a member of the US military is considered one of the most, if not the most, patriotic titles a person can have in connection with this country. Serving in the military allows one to develop a sense of integrity and direction that reflects the American spirit. You, dear reader, may have family and/or friends who actively serve or have served as US military personnel. Maybe you are or have been an active member yourself. If so, your service is admired.…

The essay by Russell Baker is astonishing. To write an essay that the writer likes is one thing but, to have more than one person like it, is an accomplishment. After writing an essay, I always disappointed myself when I read over it before it was to be turned in. The writing that I create is not something I like. After I made necessary changes to any essay that I was to write, I still didn’t like it very much. When finished with an essay, to look back, and enjoy what you have written, is beyond my comprehension. Everyone finds their calling somehow and somewhere though. I found my calling when I joined the Navy. Some may find it strange that my calling was found when I joined the military. I spent years wondering what I was to do in life, what I was to make myself. Ideas flowed around in my head but, I never stuck around with one for very long. In high school, I was in the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) and found something that I really enjoyed doing. I found it strange that I couldn’t wait to go to class every day. Even though nothing was specific like, for instance, drill or physical training, I found myself liking the NJROTC’s “mini-military” scene all together as one thing. I found myself wanting more, to be more serious with the training evolutions. I enlisted the moment I turned seventeen. There have been some rough times, I’ll admit, but, I still like it in the end. I find myself happy with what I do and always ready to do more. To break it down even further, I believe that the real calling is that I like to push the limits. People put limits on themselves and the military has shown me to break those limits, to set and achieve higher goals, and to keep going with the going gets tough. I believe that everyone should learn how to break the limits and make higher goals.…

Why I want to attend a Service Academy and why I feel that I am prepared to do so? I want to attend a service academy because it combines my desire to join the military, advance my education, and my desire to be the best that I can be. The academies are very prestige’s from what I gather and are ranked among the very top military colleges in the nation; that alone pecked my interest from the moment I heard of the academies. I have also wanted to be in the military from a very young age having great respect for the men and women who served in the armed forces. With these things in mind along with my desire to be the best that I can be the academies seemed like a no brainer. They have everything that I’m looking for a good education, military…

A military officer, however, may not be a wise career path. Advocates try to help people, not fight them. Being as timid and introverted as I am, a military officer would not work out. Neither would being a farmer. Too much waiting. It would also be very repetitive and boring. I need to know that I am making a lasting, positive impact on the people I am trying to…

Ever since I was little, I’ve always had a fascination with being a soldier. The idea of a soldier, tall, strong, and proud, was the example I always compared myself to in my mind’s eye. Whatever I did, I asked myself the question, “is this how a soldier would act?” Once I learned more about the military, and the Service Academies, I realized that this may be the right path for me.…

My grandfather served for twenty-seven and a half years in the United States Army as an engineer. That’s where it all started with the idea of me joining the ranks. He began educating me on his field of work and branch of service and telling me the benefits and goals I can achieve while doing a job I love. It sparked my interest. I then began talking around throughout the years to veterans, young airmen, and even my parents. Everyone supported the idea of joining. Once I got older, I did research on military careers and had a whole bunch of options, granted this was before I even took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, ASVAB. I had a few in mind that seemed realistic to achieve. My dad supported them but enforced the option of being a firefighter. I never thought I would be interested in that, I gave it a shot.…

It is rather unusual that I chose a dangerous field, which is being in the Navy, instead of being the stereotypical Asian doctor despite having a good family. My father has always told me these words, “ Whatever you choose, I will support you. Unless it’s drugs or anything like that, I will kick your ass. I rather see you fail trying to be successful than not try without experiencing failure”. Those words have pierced deep into my mind since I knew the harsh struggles my family endured just to give me a good life they never experienced when they were young. My father’s childhood life was robbed by the Communist in Vietnam, he was borderline close to being a Communist soldier, so he had to escape on a boat to the U.S. There…

A career in the Marine Corps has its roots in my childhood. As a kid, I read a lot a fantasy books with valiant and selfless warriors who sacrificed their lives and safety for others. They were childhood heroes to a kid who didn’t watch sports or TV. As much as I marveled and sought to be like my storybook heroes, I grew to love jet planes just as much. At the time, fast planes were the coolest. I spent a lot of my time poring over fact sheets and technical information I didn’t understand. My childhood aspirations were to be either a warrior or a jet pilot, but as I grew up I realized I could be both. I could be a Marine. The Naval Academy can turn this dream into a feasible goal which I can accomplish.…
