Family Studies Personal Statement
I knew then that I had found my calling, I knew that I was destined to help children and their families prosper. The very next day I declared Family Studies as my major. The choice for me to declare Family Studies as my major at Cal State Northridge was simple, the basis of this major is to prepare students who wish to work in social services or other helping professions. The Family Studies option at Cal State Northridge provides us as students with an extensive background in individual and family development and family interactions. The main focus is on the reciprocal relationships between individuals, families, communities and the larger society. As I come close to completing my degree in Family Studies I feel prepared to work in professions that enhance the lives of individuals and their families.

The health and wellness coordinator, Noemi Watanabe greatly impacted my decision of furthering my education in order to become a school psychologist. During my semester long internship Noemi taught the interns and myself the importance of giving back to the community. We served over 20 low income families and over 35 low income children all from the North Hills area. It was during my time here that my supervisor Noemi opened my eyes to the career path that I plan on pursuing. I was in the process of interviewing Noemi for an assignment that I had for another course, the question I asked Noemi was, “If you can pick another career choice with your degree what would you choose and why?” Noemi responded to my question with, “If I had the chance to choose another career I would have loved to become a school psychologist”.
