ELL Reflection
After teaching French for the last four years of my career, this is my first year going back to teach English to English Language Learners (ELL) at Kaleidoscope Academy. For a semester, I worked mostly with seventh and eighth graders with English Proficiency Levels ( ELP) between three and five. The ELPs tell that these students have great social English communication skills, but their academic language is not proficient yet; that is why many of them still need ELL instruction. My goal for this year was to increase my ELL students vocabulary so they can be better readers and writers. I want my students to be able to read and understand different types of texts and books and to write with a variety of vocabulary for different purposes.

I was able to assess them twice so far without announcing it. I think my students were doing very well when we were solely focusing on learning Tier two vocabulary words. I’ve noticed after giving them for the second time the assessment that several of my students’ scores dropped significantly. I assumed that it was because we stopped practicing those twenty words and transitioned to learning about word roots. I wish I could have done a better job at keeping up with the twenty words while adding the study of prefixes. I certainly could have selected from our Tier 2 words, terms that my students could practice identifying prefixes. Even though we moved to learn about word roots, I could have added a short activity weekly to have students review those twenty words in addition to the new prefixes we learned, just like what Marzano (2004) describe the sixth step for teaching vocabulary: “Apply in Learning Games--Involve students periodically in games that allow them to play with terms.” (p. 28) I am wondering if I should limit myself to the twenty words all year long or if I can start a new list of Tier two words once all my students have scored proficient on

    We’ve allowed a natural approach to language instruction to dominate our schools, hoping our English learners 
“will just figure it out.” (SCOE, 2009) This approach suggested by Kevin Clark proposes that teachers explicitly teach ELL by giving them a set of skills. Teacher will have to teach students not just vocabulary, but the sound system of language, the words and their word parts and meanings, and also rules for structuring sentences grammatically. Teaching students from this perspective can support a deeper understanding of the language. When the concept is thoroughly supported by background knowledge, explanation as to why, activities that strengthen skills, and consistency in lesson structure that follows this pattern, students are more likely to understand the concept and create a platform from which to launch higher level thinking and conclusions on following concepts and content area. Students learn more efficiently when they have prior knowledge on a presented concept. If the student can link content to a concept that they gained from previous knowledge on from their own unique background or culture, it will inevitably spark interest in that subject area. By sparking interest the teacher is now adding value to the lesson. Since students synonymize interest with value, the teacher would prove effective.     The Arizona or TESOL English learner standards use a guide for differentiating instruction for various levels of ELLs by the teachers making the lessons have a content objective meaning on what the teacher wants all their students to learn in the classrooms. Also, each lesson needs to have a language objective as well which means that are specifically for each individual ELL student and base it in their TESOL standards in the classroom. An example, is for the teacher to try to use both the content objective like making the ELL students write down important facts about learning the English language and the language objective that need to be used by the ELL students will correctly use words or verbs to describe their feelings on the reason why these facts are so important to them. When teachers are making their lessons whether it be for the ELL students on level one which are known as beginners or on level five which are known as advanced students in the English language skills it should always provide precise visual support and guided reading until students master the grade-level materials or instructions (Zehr, M. 2010). Teachers should do a little bit of research while preparing their lessons of the ELLs for the language levels that pertain to the content of the students language being taught, give the ELL students the opportunity to interact with the English speakers in the classroom, teachers should target corrections where the students have specific errors, and teachers should be using appropriate level language aspects of the ELL students when assigning assessments, classwork, tests, homework, etc. Teachers in the field of educating ELLs of different English proficiency levels because all students do not learn at the same pace or same time (Zehr, 2010).     This presentation was informative about ELL’s in Florida. First, I learned about our district’s demographics. Florida is “ranked 3rd in ELL population.” Most of the ELL students speak Spanish and come from low economic backgrounds.     English as a Second Language It is a faint memory of mine, but I still remember learning the English alphabet for the first time at Kay’s Montessori, which was a daycare my parents had me attend at the age of five. Up until I started attending Kay’s, I only knew Vietnamese because that was the language my parents taught me as soon as I could speak. My journey to become literate in English began the day I first learned the alphabet at Kay’s. From this point on, I developed my abilities to read and write in English by attending American public schools. Although it was a struggle for me to become literate in English, these challenges motivated me to expand and improve my literacy skills. My kindergarten teacher at Boudreaux Elementary was very influential in advancing my literacy skills. She had a huge collection of basic to advanced-level reading books, and she challenged us by making a competition out of reading these books. Each student could take one book home per day, read it to our parents, and return it once we finished reading the entire book to add a sticker next to our name on the “You’re a Star” board. Since I was a competitive young girl, I was determined to get the most stickers at the end of the year by reading one book per night. Little did I know that my competitive nature would help me quickly advance my reading skills. Looking back on this, I realize that this helped me to become a better reader, and that this was one of the best things that could happen to me in my educational career. Another influence to the development of my current literacy skills was my participation in the English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) and Gifted and Talented (GT) Programs. In kindergarten and first grade, I was pulled out of class an hour each day to focus more on reading and writing in English.
