Educating and guiding students to read and become fluent readers is a life changing experience for the students. Increasing literacy skills in students prepares them for academic and professional careers. Educators must reflect on their own teaching practices and implementation of intervention strategies to meet the needs of all children while taking into account of their individual reading readiness: emergent, beginner, and transitional. As educators are implementing strategies and teaching practices, they are creating a literate environment that is conducive to all readers. The Framework for Literacy Instruction is rubric that allows an educator to self-evaluate current literacy instruction. The Response Perspective for learners is an area of strength. At the beginning of school, getting to know you activities are used to gain information and understanding of students’ likes and dislikes. This includes revealing their favorite subject, color, hobby, or book. In addition to the information gained from the beginning of school, student consults are completed to learn information about students’ literary experiences. Students are asked about what kind of books they like to read, do they have anyone at home

Harcourt Trophies is the selected basal for the school district. Students are assigned a weekly story along with vocabulary and spelling words aligned to the story. Resources are limited, this results in a variety of texts being limited to addressing student interest.     Throughout my first year as a middle school Language Arts teacher, I have developed a theoretical understanding of what I believe are the necessary components to providing a meaningful and generative environment in which students develop and expand literacy skills. The teaching of literacy needs to include a balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities, and needs to be a social endeavor that provides a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of all diverse learners. My teaching strategies, beliefs and personality that I bring to my classroom can be characterized as a blend of two types of philosophical theories: social constructivism and relational teaching and learning. My philosophy of literacy education centers around five different ideals which I believe make my classroom a successful learning environment that promotes literacy acquisition. Those five elements in no particular order are: 1. building meaningful relationships with students, 2. encouraging collaborative learning, 3. providing generative learning experiences, 4. bringing relevance to subject matter, and 5. empowering students.     However, it is important to note that the five elementary schools identified in this study were originally part of a larger study focusing on the effectiveness of an individualized reading program (Firmender, 2013). Upon identification of the sample varying in demographics such as race, ethnicity, education, and socioeconomic status, the researchers traveled to the five different schools to assess students’ understanding in reading along with their speed and accuracy utilizing two regulated assessments. The research team members and teachers administered the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) reading comprehension subtest (Form A) while only the research team administered the standardized assessment of Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) pretests. Once the students’ read the ITBS material consisting of narrative, poetry, and nonfiction material from science and social studies, their comprehension was assessed through multiple-choice questions over the material. For reading fluency, the test administrators timed each student reading a passage with 250 words for 1-minute for three independent trials increasingly with difficulty.     With that in mind, I have to say that my overarching goal and hope for my literacy program is that the end result is students who love to read.
