Ells Reflection
This presentation was informative about ELL’s in Florida. First, I learned about our district’s demographics. Florida is “ranked 3rd in ELL population.” Most of the ELL students speak Spanish and come from low economic backgrounds. During the presentation, the presenters were informed about the area and connected the information to our lives. Next, I learned the reason why people move to the United States. For example, for better careers, to escape war, to escape the government, and over all they are looking for a better life. Most people call this “the American Dream.” Newcomers initially feel happy and excited. After, a little while they have a culture shock and feel scared. These students are transitioning into a huge change, and they might not know the common language. The best way to make these students feel like they are at home is to help them in the classroom. Teachers play a vital role in a student’s life, teachers help mold and shape children. ELL students should be on an ELL plan, for they can receive services to help them succeed. I will apply this knowledge when teaching ELL students by being an adult counselor. I feel the most important part of teaching students is to know your children. The better you know your student learning styles, the more successful your students will be. Especially for ELL students, it may take longer for you to find there learning style, but once you do, it will be beneficial. This standard allows teachers to know about culture backgrounds. An ELL student will feel appreciated that the teacher knows about their culture, making the student more willing to learn English.
