Creative Writing: A Christian Interview
This year I decided to interview Mrs. Jackie Hammers, the choral director of our Jr. High School. I have a love for music and she was a very inspirational teacher when I was younger, so I felt the need to ask her about her job. Mrs. Hammers is like I said a music teacher, but to be more direct she teaches 7th grade general music and is the choral or vocal music director at the school. Her daily routine consists of the following, taking attendance and watching the morning announcements before class starts. Then she teaches 3 periods of general music, then she finally gets to have her half an hour choir rehearsal, which you have to audition to be a part of. Then she teaches another period, then off to lunch! After lunch she plans her criteria …show more content…
Hammers faces decision making in her job a lot, and it could be on the spot sometimes! To be any teacher you have to be ready for anything and to improvise with your life. It seems like a difficult job to structure, but according to her the students are told the first few days of class the expectations she has to eliminate conflict, and tells those instruction to what they need to do to help keep the day running smoothly. To end my interview, I asked her a few personal questions regarding her job. The first was what do you love about your job? She said she loves to create music with her pupils, and seeing the joy it gives them when they hear it themselves! Also I asked what would help me or anyone really with understanding a job they may want. The best bet is to shadow someone you know with that job, to really have a true experience with that job. To end, I let her say anything else regarding the job of a music teacher for me. Her helpful response basically was that you need to make sure you can work well with others, even if you don’t particularly like them! “There will always be someone you disagree with wherever you work, and you must learn how to now let it affect you and the job you perform.” I could have not have picked a better person to interview, Mrs. Hammers is a very productive, kind and trustful teacher. She actually fueled my passion for music and I am glad she could clear up the questions I had to be a music teacher. I may not go that route but i’m glad I

He fueled her passion for choir with the passion he put into his choir groups. He was her role model in high school and even now because he is a big part of why she choose to be a choir…

I had the opportunity to conduct the interview with Mrs. Jamie Gustafson about her life as a special education teacher. Before the interview I was curious what her duties are every day, why she chose the profession and what she finds challenging and rewarding about her job. I also wondered how she communicates and collaborates with other teachers and parents. I believe, it is very important to talk to other teachers about their jobs and reflect on the actions and intentions of professionals, because I can discover my strengths and talents for teaching as well as identify areas in which I want to improve. Developing a professional curiosity can help me become a reflective teacher and is one of the most powerful ways to become a better, effective…

After she figured out she wanted to teach elementary school she went back to college for her masters in education, a fourteen-month degree. Deaton financed her many years of university by working and living at home to save money, as well as scholarships. Deaton went on to say that any kind of small and personal classes were her most enjoyable. She very much disliked large lecture classes, Econ 150 was an example she used. I finally moved on to asking what inspired her to become a teacher. Deaton’s father is a college professor while her mother is a special education teacher, she said that it was always assumed she would become a teacher. However, it did take her quite a bit of time to come to the same conclusion. I believe it was a mixture of many influences and circumstances. Deaton holds a Post Grad professional license pre-k to general education and a common core vocal music license. I asked her what kind of problems she faced at a student teacher she replied that learning how to control a classroom was the most difficult part. We moved on to present day, Deaton’s favorite things about her job are the many possibilities she can take to make a difference in the students…

Also within this job role I work closely with the music department within the school, and offer administration support and planning support for lessons; especially in cases where it could be far better understood by the children I work with. This enables me to identify the ways in which they learn best and help everyone including the children with special educatory needs to progress more effectively throughout their school-lives.…

I thought it would be just like a teacher and you’d have different classes throughout the day. The one thing that was different is that the band has an eighty-six minutes class period at Brimfield and at Princeville we only have a forty minute class period. I think what I like most about the job is being able to work with music and give kids the same feeling that I had when I was learning about music. I’d love to have someone else experience that same feeling. I think the thing I disliked most is the kids not listening or being too loud when the teacher talked. I think that it is disrespectful to the teacher and a disruption to the kids who are trying to learn. I’m not certain that I would like to pursue this career. There are other things that i’m interesting in that I’m also thinking about going into but music education is definitely a strong option.…

The interview with a preschool teacher named Tracy Campbell went very well. She has been a preschool teacher for a year and was previously a church preschool director. Tracy described her job as rewarding because of the opportunities to teach young children while impacting their future. For her, a typical day at work involves getting children to focus and having some fun. She encourages them during playtime, a reading circle, activities, and art. Finally, she must ensure that each child is receiving the same amount of assistance and the children with special needs have all the assistance that they need to succeed. Tracy stated that she has one student with hearing loss in her classroom and that she has challenges listening to instructions and…

The band director has a very direct teaching philosophy; he would explain lessons and then send us off on our own letting us make mistakes as a way of truly understanding the material. This teacher, Mr. Jackson, believes that though playing and learning music students gain essential skills that no other subject can provide. To say the least, at the end of my high school career I witnessed how right he was, through music I learned the value of teamwork, discipline but, most importantly, I learned the true value of perseverance. Although learning music was never an easy task, I experimented and trial tested every possible rhythm, went out of my comfort zone and experienced some hard times as I tried to master the material. Just like any other performing arts, music pushed me to my limits but, I gained so much from the experiences. First hand I experienced how the performing arts may appear at first sight difficult, impossible, and even intimidating. Therefore, with the help of my previous knowledge on the arts I want to aid my students in feeling comfortable and going on and tackling the unknown even if the have no idea where they are going. I believe that as an art educator I have to open the eyes of my students and demonstrate to them the value of perseverance when making art and continuing their process as they find and fall over new obstacles…

The first question I asked was, How much time outside of school do you spend on your job? “Well between grading papers and making lesson plans for class and other materials, probably about 16-20 hours a week. About and hour before school and a couple hours here and there after school, plus weekends.” he said. Next question I asked was, How do you come up with the lesson plans? “Its not easy to come up with lesson plans all the time, I try to make the assignments interesting so the students don't get bored of the same thing. I there is something that is fascinating outside of class that I think I can incorporate into class I try to do that, weather its something on the news or something going on with the school so the students can speak their mind, that's usually makes it more fun for them.” said Mr. Ashworth. Next I asked, What do you do with a failing student? And a student with behavior problems? “I try to make sure I am send grade checks home to there parents, I also ask the students if they need extra help of if the need to stay after class for some one on one learning. And for the behavior problem kids I usually send the student outside and have a discussion and let the student they need to get their act together.” he said . Then I asked, What are additional duties besides teaching in the classroom? “Teachers meetings, parent meetings, Homework grading and tests, Also advising the students they are assigned to make sure they are on track for graduation.” says Ashworth. Next I asked, Whats the most rewarding part about teaching? “The most rewarding part would have to be when you see a student turn things around, going from not…

Before conducting this interview, I was very nervous about speaking to the parents of my students. I was especially worried because I’m not one of the lead teachers and I’m still learning how to be a teacher. Along with this, I also had some preconceptions about J’s home life. I had no idea why J and S are growing up with their aunt and uncle and although I’m still not 100% sure why, Mrs. T opened up to me more than I thought she would. I was very pleased with this.…

For my StoryCorps project, I chose to interview one of my dance teachers, Cheryl Ann White, because I knew that there had to be a story behind why she decided to teach dance. Also, I have known her for a very long time but never really knew anything about her life. I had always thought she went to college, but in our interview I learned that she did not. Cheryl told me, “I did not go to college...I wanted to take business classes so that I would learn to do the bookkeeping...that I would need in my job.” I was also very curious to know what happens after her students leave the studio. I conducted my interview at her studio in Warwick, Rhode Island. Cheryl sat behind her desk and I sat in a chair on the opposite side of the desk, facing her. No one else was there at the time, so it felt like a very private and safe place.…
