Teacher Interview Paper

For this project I decided to interview my high school football coach from Brewster Washington Ed Ashworth, who teaches English. I asked a verity of questions to help get an understanding of what it take to become a teacher and to just get a better idea of it all.
The first question I asked was, How much time outside of school do you spend on your job? “Well between grading papers and making lesson plans for class and other materials, probably about 16-20 hours a week. About and hour before school and a couple hours here and there after school, plus weekends.” he said. Next question I asked was, How do you come up with the lesson plans? “Its not easy to come up with lesson plans all the time, I try to make the assignments interesting so the students don't get bored of the same thing. I there is something that is fascinating outside of class that I think I can incorporate into class I try to do that, weather its something on the news or something going on with the school so the students can speak their mind, that's usually makes it more fun for them.” said Mr. Ashworth. Next I asked, What do you do with a failing student? And a student with behavior problems? “I try to make sure I am send grade checks home to there parents, I also ask the students if they need extra help of if the need to stay after class for some one on one learning. And for the behavior problem kids I usually send the student outside and have a discussion and let the student they need to get their act together.” he said . Then I asked, What are additional duties besides teaching in the classroom? “Teachers meetings, parent meetings, Homework grading and tests, Also advising the students they are assigned to make sure they are on track for graduation.” says Ashworth. Next I asked, Whats the most rewarding part about teaching? “The most rewarding part would have to be when you see a student turn things around, going from not trying in school to doing good in the class because they realize that school is important for there future.” he said. The last question I asked was, What made you choose to be a teacher? “I had a couple teachers that really made an impacted in my life and I ever since then I know I wanted to be a teacher to help kids and to make an impact in their lives.”
I learned a lot from the interview with Mr. Ashworth, hearing what he had to say about teach just making me wanna be a teacher even more than before. The very last quote he said is the one that's going to stick with me, because I had a couple of teachers that made an impact in my life as well and it's a big part of why I want to become a teacher to help kids and to maybe change their lives.

In 2014 I began teaching at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville, Virginia. It was my second year of teaching and I was eager, “prepared,” and confident. I learned quickly that this was unlike any school in which I had ever taught. Patrick Henry is a predominantly economically disadvantaged school which means, I was not as prepared as I thought. My first year at Patrick Henry was challenging and there were many bumps in the road but, I learned how to navigate them quickly. Teaching at Patrick Henry has been one of the most rewarding things I have done it my life. By obtaining my Maters in Curriculum and Instruction I hope to give back to a school community that I have learned so much from.…

Mr. Devine: I believe that the role of a teacher in a child’s life is to help them reach their academic, social, and emotional potential. The manner in which this is done can vary significantly, and it is the teacher’s job to find out what strategies, methods, and interventions work best for each child. I believe that children learn best in positive, safe, and consistent environments, and that a teacher has been given a special role in each child’s life and should do their best to help succeed.…

In order to be an outstanding teacher, one must have multiple qualities and a certain demeanor. An outstanding teacher must first have a personality that is opened to change and continuous learning. The field of education is ever developing to meet the needs of a diverse population. Therefore, teachers must be prepared to adapt and seek out professional development opportunities in order to meet the needs of all learners. An outstanding teacher must also be willing to commit to working beyond the walls of their own classroom. Teaching is a profession that requires a career presence beyond the traditional forty hour work week. Once an individual has taken on this role, they must be prepared to assist their students by providing extra instructional time, developing and preparing lessons that encourage students to reach their full potential as well as participate in extracurricular activities that build both a sense of community…

Special education is defined as “specially designed instruction that meets the unusual needs of an exceptional student” according to Hallahan, D., Kauffman, J., and Pullen, P. (2012). The student that I chose to interview is currently age 25 and completed her special education program at the age of twenty-one. Due to the fact that the student was diagnosed as being mentally retarded at an early age, the mother was interviewed along with the student. In the state of Mississippi special education students are allowed to stay in school under the Exceptional Education Program until the age of twenty-one.…

At 1:00 p.m. I entered into Evoline C. West Elementary school on Thursday, July 12 2012 for an interview with Mrs. Yolanda Lawrence. As I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Mrs. Lawrence, the head teacher in this classroom. Mrs. Lawrence has no assistant at this present because of it being in the summer. After I entered into the classroom, the entire class welcomed me with “hello Ms. Flournoy”. It made my day to see all of those smiley faces greeting me. This was a 2nd grade classroom which consisted of 17 students of which 8 were girls and 9 were boys. This interview and observation was a total of 2 hours long. During the observation of Mrs. Lawrence classroom, I noticed how the students flocked under Mrs. Lawrence as she started reading one their favorite books before they did their afternoon lesson. The professor I decided to interview is my biology teacher Kane-Barnese because I am a biology major and wanted to learn more from a once Concordia student that graduated with a degree in biology. She is a new teacher that seemed a little nervous at first but now she has become a good teacher and I look forward to going to her biology class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30am to 9:20am. She is also my biology lab teacher, that is my favorite class because we get to do hands on stuff like finding the osmolarity of potatoes, cellular respiration fermentation and bean seeding oxygen consumption.…
