Marie Dymit: Effective Communication In The Classroom
We are family Teaching a choir is like having a large family be in a room together making beautiful sounds in harmony. Marie Dymit teaches both the choirs at South campus and one at North campus: Mariners, Choraliers and Bel Canto. Her students in Mariners call her Mama Dym Dym and her choirs treat each other as family. She can tell that some of the students like each other more than others, but that is how a family works. Marie is very sincere about her and her coworker being close, saying: “ Wendy Suoja and I are friends, not just coworkers.” She also said that they work well together but they teach their students differently and she knows her students see that. Her students like both the teachers but in different ways, Wendy Suoja is the theatre director so she knows she can not compete with that relationship. He was very talented and she loved the way his voice sounded but he thought that he was too good for her class and that she was not going to be able to teach him anything. At one of their concerts, she recalled upon that the pitch had already been given to the choir for them to start the song and somebody in the audience said something loud enough for this kid to hear it. This kid then had the audacity to yell something back at that person and Marie said with a small chuckle “when we came back from the weekend break, that kid was not in my class anymore.”
“When I first started here back in 2000, I was the only female conductor in the Suburban East Conference” recalled Marie Dymit. When she was in high school her conductor, Lee Carlson, was a male teacher but she remembers him always pushing her to do what she wanted to do in life. He fueled her passion for choir with the passion he put into his choir groups. He was her role model in high school and even now because he is a big part of why she choose to be a choir
