Although there are plenty of new vocabulary items in the article, I think students would nothave any significant difficulties in grasping the overall meaning of the text. I agree withJeremy Harmer with reference to pre-teaching:
“by giving them some or all those words wedeny them (a chance to practice tackling authentic texts)” (Harmer
-203). In my perspective, students learn new words with reference to context which will enable them to grasp the wordwell. In this article, I would pre-teach key vocabulary, such as:

photo-journalist

decade

motivate

to fall in loveI would convey the meaning for the above words with the help of visuals, and CCQs. The restof the vocabulary issues (which does not impede the set tasks) can be dealt with matchingwords with meaning or synonyms at the pre-reading stage.I would use this article to practise skim reading. Though the article is lengthy, the first paragraph throws enough insight about the author. This enables a gist reading. The gist reading task –
30 seconds: Appendix BI would remind the students that gist reading is a skill that requires quick reading and abilityto choose important information.

Skimming – Skimming is when you look through something quickly to see what information it contains. We often do this when we purchase a magazine or newspaper. Within the public services, people will skim a document to decide on its importance and prioritise their reading from this. You may have received a letter in the post and skimmed it to decide if it is important or not… if not you decided to throw it away.…

It is critical that students are provided interventions that will provide them the learning opportunities in content areas to ensure the students who are lacking prior knowledge and need additional instruction to build on their background knowledge. For example, The World of Words: A vocabulary Intervention program which was designed to increase conceptual understanding and vocabulary, incorporating a variety of media to enhance their understanding. It was directed towards low income families, whom have a disadvantage of exposure to literature and oral interactions, hence impeding the background or prior knowledge. The program was a supplemental program (focus on science) and successfully improved the conceptual understanding and vocabulary.…

During my weekly readings I start by previewing and scanning information. I read titles and the beginning sentences to get a brief description of what it may be saying and realizing if I know the information or not. I take notes from each section and review the information throughout the week. I highlight information I believe to be important and useful towards discussion questions and assignments and or exams. Also I find a nice secluded area that way I can focus all of my attention towards my readings and fully understand what I am reading and apply it when needed.…

However, a difficulty mentioned in the article Best Practice for ELLs: Vocabulary Instruction when teaching vocabulary, is that “teachers assume that English learners know a concept and the word for that concept in their primary language.” Often this is seen with “technical” terms in math, science, geography, and history. The article suggests that if the student doesn’t know the word in their primary language, it should be taught “directly in English.” By understanding this concept is why assessing the ELL before starting a lesson is…

Critique: I discovered several strengths and weaknesses in Holt’s argument. I agree with him that it is unrealistic to expect children to look up words in a dictionary to appreciate words. Holt is not against using a dictionary as long as the reader uses it practically to look up words that interest him or her. To look them up in order to fulfill an assignment, however, will not promise vocabulary development. It is possible that forcing words upon a beginning reader will do more harm than good. For most children, learning how to read is similar to learning a new language, and this skill set improves with practice and patience. I also agree when he says we must s careful not to embarrass students…
