Athletes aren’t overpaid

You think athletes are overpaid well if you really think about it you’re wrong. The reason why athletes gets paid so much is because of what they do for us. Many professional athletes get paid millions of dollars. Some people think that these athletes don’t deserve what they’re making. Athletes have multiple injuries when they play the sport they play. Most of the time they have to pay medical bills afterwards that are really expensive which therefore they need money to pay those bills. Also they’re inspiring kids to strive to become athletic and have jobs for the future.

To begin with, I believe Major League Baseball players are way overpaid, and have no idea what it is like to live off a regular American salary. According to baseball writer, Richard Cato, many rookie athletes are worried more about how much money there are going to make, before they even think about throwing their first pitch in there major league career. Almost 10 years ago former cubs pitcher, Mark Prior, argued and argued with team management that his 10 million dollar contract was not going to be enough to support himself and his family (par 5.) This is where my problem begins with Athletes being overpaid. They complain about not making enough money each year, where middle and lower class Americans manage to live off there much smaller salaries. I personally think the league…

I agree with what you have stated about athletes not recieving the education they deserve. According to Petrie, this is because athletes are more pampered in their academic work, and many responsibilities are taken off of athletes (p.32, paragraph 6). However, colleges bribe to athletes about coming to their universities to get a sufficient and proper education but never keep their promise. Instead, they manipulate athletes and make it hard for them to graduate by the end of their college lives (p.34, paragraph 18). As you have mentioned, Petrie does want his athletes to have a suitable education. On page 33 in paragraph 9, Petrie remarks, "It is sad to see bright young athletes knowingly compromise their potential and settle for…

Why should college athletes be paid to participate in their sports? College athletes are awarded tuition free college due to their hard work and athletic abilities, why should they get paid extra money outside of their tuition being paid? Student athletes in college only have two jobs while they are attending, to learn and become a better and smarter athlete. These student athletes don’t need extra money outside of having their tuition, room and board, and food paid for. They are also given clothing which takes away another money based need. These student athletes are given much more than other students and yet they still believe that they should be paid for their extra work outside of their performances. The main reason is because they are already paid through their scholarships to go to school and play sports. Other reasons to this opinion is to maintain their amatuer status, difficult…

The first reason why athletes should not get paid is because they already get free things from their sponsors to their fans. “The NCAA athletes get paid with psychology classes, track suits, knee braces, and ice baths.” This proves that the athletes get free stuff some of it that they don’t even use. Also the more popular you get the more fans you have and more sponsorship you have which means more money/gifts.…

This happens for the fact that, again, the people in this country tend to care about having fun rather than anything else. Another reason as to why the amount of money that athletes receive is ludicrous is that, “...retired athletes can go on to have lucrative jobs,” (Edelman 24). Being involved in lucrative jobs means always making tons of money, and more than almost everyone else. “...there are plenty of people who have difficult and dangerous jobs, and no one is handing them exorbitant amounts of money,” (Edelman 24). As to why people do not pay people who work strenuously becomes lost upon the vast majority of people, but I believe that it is for the fact that no one actually cares about them. All in all, the fact that people who gallop around all day, and still acquire millions of dollars, is a truly disturbing truth that burdens us…

On the other hand, there are some reasons on why they shouldn’t get paid. The problem with paying the athletes is would all the athletes be paid the same? If so it would be unfair for players that don’t show up on national television is getting paid the same amount as an athlete competing with 33 million people watching them. The sport industry is one of the largest industries in the United States, meaning it brings in the most revenue. But, aren’t the players actually the ones bringing the money in? The spectators are paying a big amount of money for their tickets and not to mention paying even more on foods, drinks and sporting attire. Since athletes are bringing in almost $11 billion a year, it is only fair to pay them. Being a part of such a large industry, people expect athletes to perform as professional athletes do. High expectations mean athletes have to be committed and willing to put in the long time consuming hours and hard work. This is an all day everyday commitment that leaves you with no free time or anytime at all to go out and get a job so that you can support yourself. People say it is only fair that college athletes get paid so that they can make a living and support their self.…
