Early Childhood Development
Early Child Development (ECD) generally refers to the period from conception to eight years, during which acquisition of culturally relevant skills and behaviours allows children to function and adapt effectively according to the environment in which they live and grow. ECD is a crucial phase of growth and development as experiences during that period can influence outcomes across the entire course of a life. Research has clearly demonstrated that quality ECD programmes can yield positive effects on the child’s holistic development and has a high rate of return for the investment in ECD programmes. In order to adequately prepare children Rupani Foundation is running multiple programs to promote education from early years and supportive programmes for parents and family members. All these programmes aim to help children develop their full potential and set a pathway of lifelong learning. In collaboration with Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan (AKES, P), The RF has successfully piloted two ECD programmes - Agah Walidain (Informed Parents) for 0-3 and Project Umeed (Hope) for 3-6 years of age. The programmes are designed to create a microcosm in which the needs of the whole child can be met and educators can provide an environment where holistic development can take place. In addition, RF has also initiated the Family Involvement for Child Development (FICD) programme to engage family members in supporting and developing the child holistically. Under these initiatives the foundation is benefiting over 2000 participants annually including children, parents, grandparents, newly married couples and pregnant mothers. Since it is not possible for the government to put a school in every village, Rupani Foundation believes its programs can empower mothers to become their children’s first teacher.
