A Blessing in Disguise
A Blessing in Disguise: Everything in Life Has a Purpose One Sunday morning, during a late October, despite the beautiful day, and tasks needing to be done, I decided to attend a lecture on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Though the lecture was to last for at least four hours and I was late- Thanks to over sleeping, an invisible energy was propelling me, shouting I needed to go. I grabbed an apple and flew out of my apartment, caught a taxi and arrived as the talk was beginning. I was the last person to arrive.
When the lecture was over, I leisurely strolled home, stopping on the way to pick up a couple of things at various stores. And then without warning, about five blocks from my apartment building, I tripped on the sidewalk and fell on my face. My nose was bleeding and I was dizzy, too dizzy to stand, but no bones were broken. “ I am fine“, I announced to the people on the street that stopped. They thought otherwise, and someone called 911. I was told an ambulance was on its way. I remained sitting on the sidewalk. A fall that would change everything
Though I was dizzy, I hadn’t lost consciousness, and because I hate making a scene, I asked to be put in a taxi so I could go home. I said going to the hospital in an ambulance was overkill, no need for all the fuss. Not one of the good Samaritans, who waited with me agreed.
The next thing I knew, the ambulance arrived and I was placed on a stretcher, and whisked to the emergency room of a large New York hospital, one where I had no doctors and knew none. On the other hand that didn’t concern me, since I believed I would be given a test or two and then sent home.
When the attending emergency room physicians were told what happened I was sent to radiology for a CT scan of my head and spine. The tests showed I wasn’t bleeding from the fall but the test was murky and so the CT scan was followed by an MRI of my head. I assumed all was well and that I would be discharged, and yet it wasn’t happening.

I had never felt so distressed in my life, this was a wake up call that no one in my family expected. In order to keep my body from shaking all I could do was pace around the hospital floor countless times and wait for the doctor. For the first time in my life I felt useless that I could not help her or take back the accident. I couldn’t believe that falling in such a safe nursing home could lead to such detrimental head trauma. All I knew was that my grandma needed to come out of the hospital alive and without hydrocephalus .…

All of us have a lot of questions, and we don’t have the answers to those questions; that can really discourage us. I was in college and that’s how I felt. Consequently, that led to many dismal thoughts, because I assumed that I didn’t serve a purpose. One event in particular gave me an idea, that I could begin the cycle of purpose for myself. Once, I was nonchalantly strolling to my car from class, when I spotted an anomaly in the distance. My car had been burglarized, which made me a mix of complicated emotions. I sprinted to my car, hopefully nothing had been taken. Although, the doors were wide open, only one thing was stolen; my car radio. “Why me,” I screamed at the…

It had been a few days since the occurrence of the incident on June 10th. In these few days after the event, I feel both physically tormented and emotionally distressed. It might have been the shock of the event that I unconsciously undermined the physical impact that the fall, tumble and rolling has on my body. The following morning after the incident, purple bruises surfaced in the left knee area, muscle pain and soreness on my left arm and both legs that weren't visible nor noticeable that night. In addition, I feel that I am emotionally traumatized by that night's incident. I can sense that I am on the brink of a mental breakdown. The things that I thought I could have neglect and the negative feelings that I…

Obviously no one knows what happened but the doctors told my mother I had “forgotten to wake up” was the line the doctor gave my parents. They said blood had fallen on my vocal cords causing muscle spasms in my throat, making it impossible to breathe virtually closing my throat. After the follow up surgery the doctors brought me to the recovery room and came out to inform my anxious mother and father they could see me now the follow up was a success. My mother heard my shrieks from the end of the hall since the anesthesia had worn off, she now smelled blood and vomit all over me. I knew I was just happy to see the face of my mother not all those doctors I didn’t recognize. The doctors said I didn’t vomit but later contradicted themselves claiming I…

The sky was nice and clear. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. It was perfect. It was a typical third grade day. My friends and I were in recess, goofing around, having fun. We sat on the benches and joked around. Next thing I knew my friend was on my back and I was carrying him around. Not aware of my surroundings, I tripped over a bench, closed my eyes, braced for impact, and fell face first into the dirt. I got up feeling dazed and the first thing I hear is a scream. Confused, I looked over to my friend and her face was a mixture of scared and shocked. I saw friends run to the restroom to get me paper towels, but others told me to go to the office. As I walked to the office, I began to feel pain in my lip. I walked into the office speechless.…

Vanguri and her colleagues. Two weeks later, my friend, Ahmad, and I were in my apartment and preparing for an immunology exam the next week. Out of nowhere Ahmad started to convulse and without hesitating I knew what to do. I laid and held him down until he stopped seizing and paid attention to the length of the seizure. Then, I turned him onto his side. Immediately after, I called 911 and explained what had happened and how long the seizure lasted. Upon arriving to the hospital, the doctor immediately drew blood and ran some tests and discovered that Ahmad had forgotten to take his medication. I took the initiative and created two alarms on my phone and to this day remind him twice a day to take his medications.…

    9health Fair Reflection

On April 22, 2017, five classmates and I took part volunteering at the 9Health Fair. Before showing up we all were e-mailed instructions on the Health fair protocols for taking blood pressure (BP), performing Body Mass index (BMI) and pulse oximetry (02 sat). When arriving we all kind of gravitated to a station. I ended up working with Allie and Karen in the BP/02 sat Station. When the fair began, it seemed that we were pretty slow, so I volunteered to stand by the blood draw station informing patients where our BP/O2 Sat stations was located. While working the line trying to get customers to our station, I heard a thump. One of the people who had their blood drawn, stood up and then fell straight back to the ground. I watch as this…

The initial chaos of the emergency lasted merely an hour. Saline fluid filled my veins and computerized tomography scans sliced coronal views of my brain. I tried to relieve my anxiety by pretending that I was on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy- a director would call cut, the fear would subside, and the scene would end. I did not understand that I was facing a serious medical emergency that the doctors could not solve. I tried to muster the strength to move my lower extremities. My focus moved from the doctors’ confused faces to the people who stood in front of me. My family, gripping the spooks of the bed, reminded me that I should not compare the situation to an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I realized that a director would not conclude the day with an oration on the success of our TV segment. Rather, a neurosurgeon would come in the room and tell me that I possibly had a stroke and that I had severe head trauma in the form of a concussion.…

I was soon released from the hospital, and allowed to go home. It is impossible to forget the lousy car ride home. It hurt to sit up straight, so I laid down in the backseat of my mom’s Ford Explorer, and proceeded to watch a movie. By the time I got home, my back was killing me. I was forced to stay on our couch for the next few days, and needed help walking and showering, since I was not allowed to do anything to harm the stitches placed in both of the open wounds.…
