In Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams, Codi Noline is a lost and directionless young woman who's always felt like she doesn't belong anywhere. Though when she finds out her father has Alzheimer's, she decides to move back to her hometown, Grace, to take care of him, and is overwhelmed with the task of sorting through her past. Codi has always resented her father, Doc Homer, for raising her and her sister to be different - when that is really just his way of bringing them closer – by pushing everyone else further away. She constantly complains about how her father never reached out, and ignores Doc Homer's attempts to express his love throughout the course of the book. The story approaches Codi as the victim, but in reality, Doc Homer is the one who suffers the most.…

Over spring break, I explored the Gulf Coast area with some friends. We camped at Ochlockonee River State Park in Sopchoppy, FL. During these days we also visited different locations of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. We discovered an area with a beach and a boat ramp near Panacea, FL. The next day we went to St. Marks Lighthouse. Along the drive down to the lighthouse, we discovered different types of lands and ecosystems.…

The sciences have managed to encapsulate my intrigue throughout my life, an intrigue that has pushed me to seize many opportunities that enrich my knowledge towards the sciences. UW-Eau Claire offered a Domestic Intercultural Experience to Yosemite National Park in May of 2016 that I had the blessing of attending. A squadron of Eau Claire college students accompanied by two professors of the University flew to California for nine days to explore the natural geologic beauty of Yosemite National Park. We packed our experience with multiple hikes around the park as well as a few presentations and talks that discussed the history of the park and how it was formed. Being surrounded by massive walls of plutonic rock made me realize the awesome power of nature that comes in the form of glaciers. Mono Lake was also a part of the agenda on the immersion experience. At the lake, we learned that its salinity is caused by the lack of an outflow for the lake and we discovered the volcanic history of the Mono basin.…

Doing things on your own and doing something to make others happy takes a lot of perseverance. In The Call of the Wild Buck starts off just a normal dog, but, he perseveres into a tough, independent dog who can stick up for himself. That can relate to my mom's situation. My mom had to go back to her sophomore year in college when her dad was sick in the hospital with cancer. She had to learn to be okay and deal with it on her own. She needed to be strong for her family. Buck and my mom started off very dependent on others to help them with whatever they are going through. By the end of their particular situations, they were more independent. Being alone and growing up, experiencing hard things can be really hard, but it’s a part of life. It is something everyone has to go through.…

My family and I went to Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is one of the greatest parks in the country with many beautiful sightings. It was established, to protect the land on October 1, 1890. Yosemite sits in the gorgeous state of California. We loved going to Yosemite National Park to enjoy our lives. According to the establisher of this park, John Muir, “It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of nature I was permitted to.” I asked the park ranger how many acres of land is Yosemite made of. He said 748,036 acres. Yosemite is definitely a national treasure. There is soaring cliffs, huge waterfalls, and vast meadows inside the territory of Yosemite. There are many activities you can do. President Theodore Roosevelt said, “There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods...and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children’s children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred.”…

All of us have different conflicts in life that we need to defeat, whether it is man vs. man, man vs. society, man vs. self or man vs. nature. We cannot control the outcome of man vs. nature, it presents challenges we are always looking for. If you can beat nature than you are a real survivor and can defeat anything in your path. For this paper, I am going to focus on two films that face the conflict of man vs. nature head on, Sean Penn’s Into the Wild (2007), and Jean-Marc Vallee’s Wild (2014). Jean-Marc Vallee’s female character in Wild detaches the typical stereotype shown in Sean Penn’s Into the Wild that wild stories belong to men and navigates and roots women into the American tradition of man vs. wild stories, leading us to question if people will ever say wild stories belong to men again. Although, similar McCandless and Strayed’s journey’s differ due to their gender, solely because in American culture we have seen men vs. nature, not women. First, I’ll show how McCandless is able to own the adventure film by having the benefit of flowing the path of many men that explored before him; then, I’ll investigative…

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.” - Mary Anne Radmacher. Joseph Lemasolai Lekuton, a 2003 graduate of Harvard University with a master’s degree in educational policy, built up his success from nearly nothing. He grew up in a Maasai nomadic tribe on the savannas of Kenya. Joseph was like any other boy in his tribe until one of his brothers was told he must attend school. His brother refused to go, and soon Joseph was the one going to school every morning. Joseph continued on until he got accepted to college in America. If Joseph had thought and acted differently however, he may not have made it so far, and his setting may have been the biggest impact on these thoughts and actions. By giving him courage, strength and perseverance his setting impacts his thoughts and actions.…

At a young age Jane Goodall was fascinated by dinosaurs and used to imagine being back in the prehistoric era to explore the ancient landscape and the other dinosaurs. Most of the time in her childhood, Goodall spent most of her time reading books due to no internet or television. The books she enjoyed reading the most were different animals and the environment where she learned about animal endangerment and environmental destruction, like the extinction of the dodo birds who were eaten by Captain Cook and his shipmen. Goodall also couldn’t predict that many animals would end up being endangered due to human aspirations. Luckily, Goodall was able to meet some inspirational people who are trying to save the endangered species in the world. One of the first stories of “Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species Are Being Rescued” is the wild black footed ferret who is located mostly in North America from Canada to Mexico.…

The song that I picked is called “Young, Wild, And Free” By A rap Artist named Wiz Khalifa. Wiz Khalifa started out as an underground rap artist originally from Pittsburgh. A few years later he blew up and hit the mainstream rap game. Wiz is known for his care free lifestyle, usually has weird hairstyles and his body is covered in tattoos from head to toe. He raps about his heavy use of marijuana, chasing women, and living a fast life. His “Young, Wild, And Free” Song is how my Attitude toward life is right now. The way I interpret the song is about living your life the way you want too. The chorus of the song goes “So what we get drunk, So what we smoke weed, We’re just having fun, We don’t care who sees, So what we go out, That’s how it's supposed to be, Living young and wild and free.” In today’s Society I feel like people are always judgmental, especially toward to younger generation. My own personal experience is when I got a couple of tattoos; people told me that I would never get a job. Which is untrue a lot of successful people have tattoos and piercings. I feel as if you can never let other individuals hold you back from how you live your life. You’re going to miss out on great opportunities that will come your way. That’s what I am laid back I don’t let the little things bother me, and I don’t care what other people think of me. I do whatever I want the consequences may be good or bad but, I just live my Life Young wild and…
