Women In The Military Draft

War has been a controversial topic for its entire existence. Warfare is as old as humans themselves; for as long as history has been recorded, there is evidence of war. War seems to be the major way conflict is resolved, although this resolution does not come without consequences. The question is, who should have to die for the conflict to be resolved. A particularly controversial topic in war is the draft. The military draft is the forced, random selection of a people to fight in war. The United States has used the military draft in the country’s history, but the US has never drafted females. For the past few years, women have been extremely vocal on their beliefs on this debated topic. Women have accused men of being privileged and not giving the rights to women. They have made a very impressive leap in the military field in the past years. “There are currently 1.4 million members of the active-duty military, of which 14% are women” (McGuire 692). While 14% may not seem like a lot, it is actually a significant increase, because women were not even allowed in the military just years ago. This may be a good start for women’s rights, but if women want full equal rights, then women should be required to register for the military draft. In the future, if there ever is a time of danger, the United States needs to know the country will have enough soldiers to fight the battles. The draft assures there will always be enough soldiers for combat. As of now, America is only secured by men in this draft. If women were added to the draft, there would be more soldiers to fight for the military and more civilians in the lottery pool from which to pick. Women being added in the military draft would make Americas military much stronger. With the military draft, generals would be forced to make decisions more carefully and look at the amount of lives at risk before going into battle. There would be more lives at risk and the lives would not be of volunteers, it would be of men and women who were randomly selected to fight. “A truly American military, inclusive of all social classes, might cause politicians and voters to be more selective in choosing which battles are worth fighting and at what expense” (Epstein 87). Theoretically, more lives would be saved if women were in the draft, because there would be a more diverse amount of lives at
